Messages From Death RowA Poem by AveTNInspired by a friend of mine who is on death row. I often look at the world from his perspective, and I have realized that we all face our own prisons, in our own ways.Surrounded by the inner walls of a cage Metallic hopelessness tantalizes every sense A story cut short on the very first page A life that will remain forever evanescent Worldly forces constrict what could have become Of an existence that too soon will be over and done All must face a prison, whether real or self-made Our innocence do we offer as an unequal trade For a world that is too real and merciless A world that only leads to a lonely, dark abyss An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth The rules of the game one cannot pick and choose A game called life which is far from fair From the pool of blame and guilt each takes a share And presents it as a poor means of recompense In desperation we pay for our heinous offenses For heaven do we strive, honor do we chase Worthy of neither is the human race © 2014 AveTNReviews
