Footprints

A Poem by averynean

I lay on the ground and hold my breath while I let you walk over me,
you keep your head forward,
staring into nothing.
You dig your fingernails into my arm and tangle my veins,
afterward, I kiss your bloodied knuckles.
You plunge your hands into the crevices of my brain,
unraveling it and rewiring it
to remember a nicer version of you.

In return, I receive the hope that you’ll someday
hold me close
and stay.

Constructive criticism? feedback? Should I have done anything different?
