Changing ChannelsA Story by Nathan GriffinI wrote this in 2014, and its one of my favorites. Rip it apart.13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and you were suddenly standing right there. I turned the volume up at 19. It didn’t change quickly, but at 20 you were laying in my arms, talking about sunshine. 21, we saw the dark, but realized it wasn’t for us. 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and the only thing we could hear were bells and cheers. 28, the sirens of a boy rung throughout the house 29, it was the sound of doors and children. 30, his head banged against the chair, but he will be alright. 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, through fights and blights, we were just going to be alright. 37, came at the speed of sound so, let’s just cherish tonight. 38, I will lay by you, in sickness and in health. 39, I always thought that our prayers would come true. 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, number one was showing us his years and tears. 46, our commitment would never end. 47, we saw our baby boy become a man. 48, we wanted it to never end. 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, we knew this was our time. 55, you laid by me in sickness and in health. 56, we sat there on the beach, wishing channels wouldn’t change so quickly. 57, we saw new life land into our hands. 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, time only gets faster, doesn’t it? 64, remember that time he bonked his head on this chair? 65, age is still only a channel. 66, our parents have all moved on. 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, I guess it’s time we move on. 73, home is where the family is. 74, the backyard is where we spend most of our days. 75, I can’t believe how fast he grew up. 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, retirement home is looking good isn’t it? 82, our garden is big enough to feed the family, maybe we should get out more. 83, I’m feeling too old for this. 84, is where I turned down the volume. 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, this is where you left me. 91, it’s just not my time to pack my bags. 92, our family is only getting bigger. 93, if only you were here to see this. 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, age is only a channel, but… it’s just my time to head home. © 2015 Nathan Griffin |
