Heaven's Mailroom

A Story by Laura E. Aranda
"

Inspired by my family reunion Balloon releasing ceremony this beautiful saturday morning

"

'Gather 'round, guys. I can see a new batch coming in. Looks like its coming from south...eh, southwest United States...could be Mexico. White balloons. At least fifty of them, is my guess...maybe seventy-five."

"For an angel, you sure don't know much.", grumped Gary, but the twinkle in his eye as he stood by his mother made the angel just laugh and peer over the portal's golden balcony once more.

"Ah, the kids still live in Louisiana!", one elderly woman named Ella sighed, hopeful.

"Here they are...Here you go. One for you. Where's Patrick? And this one is for Samantha Tonya? Samantha? Ah, and one for the both of you two.", the angel said with a dramatic grin.

He handed a pure white balloon warmed by the passing sun to Gary and Ella.

Granny, I wish you could see CaeCae and Maggi. I miss you so much. Love your favorite granddaughter, Laura

Ella smiled her healthy smile that she had now in heaven and gathered a few butterflies from around her, kissed the backs of each and sent them in response to Laura's balloon message. Though she had not seen Laura since she was nine years old, she could imagine by the beautiful handwriting on the balloon that she was very intelligent and creative. A beautiful granddaughter that she would be proud of, with great grandchildren that she would have loved to hold and spoil more than she had with Laura.

Gary, acting like it wasn't a big deal finally took the balloon to read the other side.

Uncle Gary. You know I miss you so much. I think about you and how you always make me smile and laugh. Sometimes life here gets so hard and I remember the times you would talk to me about my parents and yet you did it in a way that made me laugh instead of cry. I love you. xoxo ~ LAURA

Gary shrugged a little and sent a puff of cool breeze down to the world below. It would hit Laura square in the face eventually and she would catch her breath and smile. That smile would be one straight from Uncle Gary to her.

"Hey you! Angel over there. Thanks for the balloon. You ain't so bad after all." Gary said, sautered off with Ella on his arm.

Waving, Angel just grinned and let them go on. Heaven had so many new places to explore.

Laura this is so beautiful, so heart-warming. Such a wonderful thought to think of our loved ones who have gone before in this way. It kinda reminds me of the pennies from heaven story. I began collecting pennies I found after my grandmother died because I knew they were from her letting me know she loved me and was thinking of me. I still have my jar, in fact I have 2 jars now One is full and the other is about half full. Everytime I find a penny which ever of my loved ones pops into my mind first, that's which one sent my penny. It's a nice comforting thought.
Very well written Laura.

This story of yours made me feel good inside, and isn't that a good story should achieve for the reader? Yes, heaven where our good loved ones live and wait for us is a tale you tell quite well.

just curious if you have read "the lovely bones". if not i would recommend it. your little story reminds me a bit of that representation of heaven.

i dig the idea of balloon messages. it's childlike in the best sense. our sense of innocent possibility.
