I passed Death on the Highway

I passed Death on the Highway

A Poem by Laura E. Aranda

I passed ol' Mr. Death on the highway

I waved hastily as I drove by

No way was I going to stop and say 'Hi'

He with in eighteen wheels and me in my four

I am a young mother and have much more life to explore

I passed ol' Mr. Death on the highway

I tried hard not to catch his gaze as I drove by

There is so much I have to do, I tried to justify

Ol' Mr. Death just nodded and gave me a little time more

I kissed my baby and tried to smile as my grateful tears hit the floor

How eerie that I happened to read this poem about the danger of big trucks. We went to the movies this afternoon and followed a huge truck with an empty trailer that was weaving over the entire right lane of the freeway. I hope the driver got home without causing an accident. He was neither too tired, too preoccupied with his cell phone, or too drunk to be driving. Scary!! We did NOT pass him but watched as others did. Your poem is a great wake-up call for safety! Sharon

Well everyone is pretty much correct. Eerie. That's the word that naturally comes to me, and evidently everyone else, when I read this. Never thought death as a trucker, but than truckers see death as a black dog. I don't know if that's a stereotype or not. I apologize to all truckers if that is.

Those big rigs scare me also. My dad drove those big trucks and I rode with him sometimes and even inside the truck it was scary. There is so much power and you can feel it. Sitting up high looking down on the other vehicles is unbelievable. But being in one of the other vehicles is very frightening when you are close to one of the rigs. You feel as if you are being pushed off the road, or sucked under the tires.
Very original poem and beautifully written.

This is some of the best rhyme work I've seen in a while, not a big fan myself, but it was very well done here. This is something to be very proud of, and very very creepy. Good work.

Richard.
