Though I'm an Obama supporter and a true Dem, I understand what you've conveyed here.
I do think this applies to any political candidate, though. All political candidates are hollow without the support, promotion, emphasis and force of their party. If not, you or I could run for president right now. It's the money and the backing that make any mere man a threat politically.
And to people who believe this to be Obama support, PLEASE polish your analytic skills. Read deeper. Please.
Laura's so good that you don't even realize she is criticizing the man with finesse. Pure finesse. You don't have to agree with her in order to recognize the skill involved! Impressive.

How can this be misinterpreted? Even though I'm English, I still got it.
Brilliant piece, I feel this way about our Labour government. And the Tories... Come to think of it, all parties in our government are like that! Makes you wonder why you vote... (I still do, just so I can complain about them!)
All party 'leaders' are just puppets. Though in my country, I'm sure a muppet could do a better job than Gordon Brown! Vote Kermit!
Hmmm. . .well he seems to have any "messianic" tendencies in check. Seems to me he's fundamentally better than the Democratic Party, or at least as good as its better firmer instincts. I see that everybody either "jumped on-board," or blatantly misunderstood your assertion, but he HAS to be more skillful and inspirational than Kerry or Gore (tho' the latter, and the country were concretely robbed in '00), or you get the Flat Earth Society w/a Hitchcock "Psycho" score again (since long ago the Repubs stopped being fiscally responsible, I have no idea what they think they amount to anymore; neo-con, CON indeed -- gut the government, destroy division of church and state, gibber pre-rationally with stylish eyeglass frames).
Yes, it's true, we don't elect true indie candidates -- yet -- so Obama is, in that sense, nothing without his party. But, based on performance in the last 8 years, the Dems are "expert" at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and so are nothing themselves, without a skillful AND meaningful candidate. Symbiosis; not either-or.
Interesting, I like it. I really like the emphasis on skin, since so much has been said about race in this election. I'm tired of the political parties and their "Master of Puppets" acts.
