Peasant and PrincessA Chapter by A. L. AllenMy mind constantly wanders To the boy that lives with the farmers My lovesick heart often ponders What this feeling garners
That boy is so beautiful His face kind and youthful I can tell that he is smart and very helpful But whether he knows me is doubtful
I watch him from my window He helps provide for a widow I watch as he kindly helps her sew Curtains for her own window
I look for him on the street Hoping someday we’ll meet But we would have to be discreet
My father would not like it In fact, his anger would be lit He would be driven to a fit And the boy’s death sentence would be writ
For the boy’s safety, I will keep my love quiet Even though all my actions are guided by it.
* * *
I see her when I go to sleep I see her when I have errands to keep If only our differences weren’t so steep
She is the lord’s daughter I am just a lowly farmer There is no way I could charm her
She far outshines me It’s plain for everyone to see
Her skin is so fair Gold the color of her hair When she’s in the street, I can’t help but stare Every time I see her there But then I become aware Of my clothes that show wear and tear. Though I always do my share I will never have enough for us to be a pair.
My heart is broken Every time my love goes unspoken I wish I could give her a token Of my love bespoken
But it will never be…
The one thing I wish is for her to see Is the one true me Before I am dead, and my soul is set free.
Maybe then she’d recognize my deep affection Maybe she’d even share the connection If so, my heart would be able to withstand any other rejection And my soul would live on in blissful resurrection
