An Unfaithful LoverA Poem by Pauline Hamilton
An unfaithful lover
Not for me, this way of yours, Where love is nought, temptation soars, Not for me the path that leads Away from growth, destroys the seeds Of hope, and love and truth between, The two of us, and it will mean, That pinnacle of love, unreached, And joy of life will ne'er be breached, For you my friend, unlike my other, You remain, an unfaithful lover.
Unfaithful, he cried, senses offended, But surely this can be amended, No, she smiled, wistfully, It is in you, your soul, you see. You cannot reach beneath the crest, Your heart, my dear, must be addressed, And whilst you chased aimlessly, I gained direction, away from thee. For you my friend, unlike my other, You remain, an unfaithful lover.
How can you say such things? He asked, When in your glow I often basked? You call me faithless, but you too, Kept another from my view. Your senses must be dull, she sighed, For you, my love, I often cried. And when you're gone, my soul will bleed, And hunger for you with such need. For you my friend, unlike my other, You remain, an unfaithful lover.
His heart was broken, mystified, For her, he thought, I would have died, To self, and any that she asked, I would have done any task To be so cruelly treated, thus, Does she wonder I needed touch? From music, and the gift of dance, Waiting not, leaving to chance, That she would say to another, You remain a faithful lover.
Faithless? Pah, that she would see, I am not gone so easily, My heart is hers, but I demand, That she would leave her others arms, Before we meet, our souls entwined, Spirits joyful, love divine. And then together forward walk, Away from all this hurtful talk. For she surely is, unlike my other, The one to be an unfaithful lover.
