BE The ChangeA Story by Kiba TrippI know I am going to sound really cliché but have you ever felt as if you weren't being the real you; or you weren't able to express what you thought; or you were too “different” to be yourself? Out of a pool of 50 teens from Mission Oak high school and Tulare Union high school. I asked the 50 people two questions: have you ever been called fake? Have you ever been called weird? I have found that 56 - 60% of teens are “fake,” in others teen’s eyes and those 12-15% of people are classified as weird. (Logos) When we come to school and we have people talking about us badly andor we get bullied. It makes us cover ourselves with this mask that is thin at first and easy to remove but every time someone says you are stupid, a quitter, are lame, never will be good at anything, and the list goes on. The mask gets thicker and thicker. It gets harder and harder to remove. The more we are trying to be like whoever we hang out with andor what are family wants us to become. We add to the mask and as we do we lose sight of who we really are. If I were to be the real me I would be wearing my tail andor my beanie every day, but what is the one thing holding me back? It is the fact that people call me “weird and crazy.” Now let’s look even closer to a member of 5th period at Fidel Banuelos and his story. He has been called stupid for the way he acts. He has been classified as “Fake,” (gang banger) because they didn't believe that he was becoming a follower of Christ. He was told that he was a “cheater,” because of past relationships. He is himself by blocking out all the negative influences that people say and only letting in the good. He was called a quitter by his family and it made him quit football and he no longer wanted to do it.
There are things that happen if you hide everything or try to please someone. But before I get there a Psychologist Harriet Barkier January 21, 2004 who works at Los Angeles Time came out with these 4 side effects that are “1. Loss of sleep, 2. Anger, 3. Depression, 4. Loss of feelings.” People who have been hiding who they are for their whole life lose everything they once were and once knew about themselves. Raise your hand if you have ever felt out of place? Raise your hand if you had to be someone you felt you weren't to satisfy a person. When you are hanging with a group of people you try to be like them. Right? Look at what you do when you are with a group of people. How do you act? For example look at Mrs. Allen’s posters. One of them says ‘Be you because everyone else is taken’ As psychologist Harriet Barkier says " '’to please is a disease' " and in excess it can become an addiction that eventually results in your neglecting your own needs and wants, and ironically losing the respect of the people you are trying to please. ‘(Logos) To become who you are on the inside show your heart. The only way you can truly be happy and or become yourself. Show how you care for topics and stand for what you believe. For example that one time you were hanging out with a group of friends and they call you stupid and or in my case a B. We push it off and say ‘o yeah i know’ but we just changed what we were feeling because we want to hang out with this particular group While you show who you are you will gain friends or lose them. You will gain respect or lose it. But the reason for this that you are going to be you no matter what If people were more of who they were the world would look so different it wouldn't be I want to become like someone. It would be I want to be me and no one else. I want you to think of everything you think isn't the real you and try to turn it around. I dare you become who you are don't change who you are because people call you weird. BE THE CHANGE. MAKE THE DIFFERENCE> BE YOURSELF. I want you all to stand up and while you stand there watch this and then stay standing if you are ready to be yourself. Now who is ready? When you walk away from who you really are. You will never know who you will become.
