That Old Cliche

That Old Cliche

A Poem by Audri Carlevaro

I never understood
that old cliche
where the look in someones eyes
could be compared to a summers day.
Or how when they cry,
they’re an ocean with unending waves.
I just didn’t get it.
I didn’t think I would ever
compare someones eyes to a
glistening orb of ebbing
blue and green.
I used to laugh,
call it unrealistic.
An unnecessary and ridiculous
cliche.
In fact,
I was mid guffaw
when she walked through the door.
My eyes caught hers.
And two centuries worth of poets
appeared behind her,
knowing grins on their lips,
because when I looked at her,
I was sure.
Her eyes
were what made galaxies.
And my fingers itched
to find the words
she so greatly deserved.

Its all been said before is a good way to look at it. Being able to describe someone stunning in new terms is a challenge for all poets.
