Memory of WaterA Poem by Audra BurwellShells adorn her crown of silver and fire, Their spikes glinting in the morning glow, Reflecting off the crystalline ocean below. Her hair is a myriad of changing colors, Flowing down her back like a mass of kelp, Their tendrils slithering over her pale skin. Iridescent scales flow over her shoulders, Encasing her neck in a web of vibrance, Blues, golds and pinks all dancing together. Her nails are carved from mollusks, Found deep in the heart of the ocean, Their spirits living on through her flesh. She is the goddess of the seas, Queen of the thundering tides, Ruler of a kingdom too vast to fathom. Her life is ruled by one single curse, A limitation of power, An imprisonment of the soul. She cannot leave her throne upon the cliff, For her spirit will become one with the sea, Dissolving into the abyss. Her life is a fabrication of reality, A halfway point between life and death, An endless limbo of entrapment. She lives on as a memory in the water, All that she ever was and all that she was may become, Is carried upon the evening tide. © 2022 Audra Burwell |
