A Cold December Day

A Cold December Day

A Poem by Shaun Payton

Records indicate dear poet
on a cold December day
you wandered out
blowing on your hands
for warmth and comfort
wondering where no other
soul is to be held which
way does a frozen river bend?
Which way leads to the end?
My sheet here indicates
you've searched all your life
and it comes back to a cold
December day with iced tears
and wasted blood through veins,
mourning and slipping as you
struggle along, look at you still
trying! Your turning blue,
yet you fathom the warmest
you ever felt, the dedication
is remarkable.
Look with those hazel eyes
dear man, at the storms within
your heart, I promise soon they'll
come to a dead stop.
You only carry one key, apparently
it fits no lock,
were you searching for that chamber?
One last shallow breath dear poet,
take comfort and meet death.
You lay there still, and I must wonder
of the hidden words you have died
to say,
yes indeed,
its a cold december day.

the narrator interviews the character contemptuously as if mocking a mute. how cold is the narrators heart. how cold is the frozen river. and yet how warm the dying man's wasted blood. i wonder if the steam of his last shallow breath was even seen.

this was absolutely brilliant in the way it illustrated the scene and exposed the nature of the narrator's personality. bravo. worthy of a standing ovation.

Icy December, that's exactly what it feels like some days when you're trying to write something that's in your mind but freezes up in the pen...ice'd tears, great imagery there Shaun. Muchly enjoyed!
