Sonnet of the Downward Stair (extended)A Poem by A.S. PriestleyA descent into the world of the beast.Yonder way lies a downward stair, the rest you seek is pondered there. A stygian wisp flutters out of the dark, It swims through your ears and then it departs. It groans for release and speaks ill of fate, that you might befall the hellfire’s embrace. The blackness calls out with a deafening drum, As the light flickers out to an aura of plum. As you make your descent along the rail, a wisp again begins to wail. A portent of doom cries out abound, when later you hit an awful sound. At the base of the stair you step into the lair, Of the Horned One in wait for your soul to bare.. Your foot gives way to a crack and snap, as you survey a floor of spines and caps. Not helms nor visors but crowns of bone, skulls, teeth, and spines sprawled across the roam. A dark beastial figure inches in closer, the haze of plum gives way to the imposer. He with horns fixed upon his head, fingers stretched like knives down to his leg. Will greet thee hence to settle forth, your soul laid bare with no recourse. Before your eyes your body wriggles, And through the flesh the crawlers trickle. He takes your arm and leads you forth, with a grimace so vile youre filled with remorse. © 2021 A.S. PriestleyReviews
