I Am

I Am

A Poem by Aspiring Angel
"

Life for some

"

I Am ...

I Am
The little girl that lives down your block

I will wake up in the morning and know
That my new today will be like
All the rest of my days
That never seem
To bring me reason to smile

I will have no breakfast before I go to school
I will search alone for something
Anything ...
To take to eat for my recess

You can be sure no one will want
To trade lunches with me

I will put on a dress that is wrinkled
Dirty and tattered . . .
And worn three days in a row

I will be laughed at

Ridiculed . . .

A big word for someone my age
To so completely
Understand its meaning

I will cry
Sometime during my day
When my heart can take no more . . .
I will cry

I so want to belong

Why can't I laugh
And be asked to jump rope too

Why can't I have little girl secrets
Whispered in my ear

I am 'beauty redefined'
To not be anything to anyone . . .

Other than the victim of cruel jokes
And questions formed to be lived
Over and over again in my heart
In the loneliness of what I call home

I am afraid and lonely at home
And lonely and afraid at school
I don't understand

It is not easy being me

I am David
I am eleven years old

Daaavid Daaavid ...
Its your turn to bat
Oh we forgot
YOU  CAN'T  DO  THAT

Daaavid Daaavid can't catch a ball
You can't do anything
WHY  TRY  AT  ALL

Just once . .
just once . . .

Why can't I catch that darned ball

My Dad tells me that I am
beautiful in heart and soul

Why don't I feel beautiful

From what I can see to be beautiful
You have to be just like everyone else

We learned in school today about
The definitions of words

I think the word beautiful
Needs to read

Beautiful . . .
Only if you belong
And are like everyone else

It is not easy being me

I am Elizabeth

Are you surprised
To see my picture appear below
These youngsters that heart's
Try so hard to understand
This word belonging

This word . . . beauty

I am seventy-eight years old

I have lived through
Heartaches ... joys
And raising my family

Not long ago I stood beside
My husband of fifty years
As he left this earth

I am now alone in a world that
Seems to forget that the elderly
Has contributed much and would
Still like to contribute

We are often laid aside
Like yesterday's newspaper

Our children are far too
Busy in their own lives
To make time for someone
That has always made
The time for themselves

A phone call for some of us
Brings the only joy we know
When visits become so rare

We have slowed down and a heart
That feels young does not
Make the body work as it once did

I should perhaps
Be ashamed of myself for
feeling this way

So alone
So useless . . . . .

We live in a society
Where redefined beauty
In the eyes of so many
Has no place in a vocabulary
Of the modern world

It is not easy
To no longer be young
And be able to participate
In a world that has seemed
Now to pass me by

Its not easy being me

And so my poetie friends
Here you see . . .
Beauty redefined

Redefined to a world that is just
Sometimes too busy to really care

This was origionally written
For the challenge phrase
Redefined Beauty

Beauty . . .

May be in the eyes of the beholder
But
What of the hearts that behold

Do we really take the time
To feel ... To see

One of the most touching to the heart
to redefine a heart and soul is not so easy
you have done a tremendous task
to bring out the difficult parts
as to why these ones, as many out there
go through this, it's your wonderfulness
that brings it all out for all hearts to tread, to read
very beautiful Lesa, outstanding!!

My gosh.....I'm welling up, trying not to cry. What a touching piece of art! This one really made me think about my Mother, about my daughter, about my brother....

This is such a sad but truthful poem. Over the years I worked with teens. It was always sad to see what they were going through and how lonely so many of them really were. Sometimes I would take some of them and visit a nursing home. At first some would drag their feet about it. But it was fun to watch the friendships develop between the teens and the elderly. It was like they needed each other and finally found some friendship that they were looking for. It is sad the the elderly are pushed in a corner because they still have much to offer.
Your poem so real and truthful. Another beautiful work.
