To My Very Special
'Little Boy'

Grandma is home now
Our visit is over

Our time with you was so very special
And we were so blessed to be able
To watch you play ball
For the very first time

I not only saw you on the field
But I also saw
Another piece of my heart
Standing proud in memory

Number 12 ... your Daddy
Was with you on the field

I saw him
Not only as your Daddy
But My little boy
That wore the number 12
Of so many years ago

The Pitcher that tried so hard
Just as you did as I watched
This very special game

There you were
My first born grandchild
On your way to growing up

You hit the ball
And it came off the T
Only trouble was ...

You ran the wrong way

We were all watching
Just a few
Little hustles away
As you dropped your bat
And ran to third base

You were so excited
That we were watching
You were running
To where we stood

It didn't matter ...
That didn't take your smile away
And you warmed the bench
Till it was your turn again to play

The trouble began
When you were to take the field
You began to run to where you
Always stood and your coach called

"Jacob come over here"

He began to put you in padding
And helmet and pointed to a
Corner of the field
Where you had never stood

You thought you were
Being punished for running
The wrong direction before

You did not understand
That you were to be Catcher

Not understanding
What a Catcher was
A four year old
Wiped tears from his eyes

It broke Grandma's heart
To see you hurt in that way
And yet ...
Grandma knew a grownup lesson
Is sometimes hard learned

And then ...

There was Daddy
By your side as always

You dried your tears
As Grandma's spilled over
As I watched my Grandson
And my Son
From across the field

"Jacob you are the greatest
The world has ever seen!
You're playing Catcher!
How great can that be?"

"I'll explain it all latter Son
Just listen to me
If you believe you're the greatest
Then great you will be''

The game was soon over
And we saw no more tears

Grandma ... Grandma!
Did you hear
How they cheered?

Jacob you are the greatest
The world has ever seen
If you don't believe it
Just ask Daddy and me

One day Grandma
will watch you
play ball all grown up

But this memory
Will forever be mine

The day the little boy
Did not understand

But yet
Everything was made Okay
By the encouraging words
Of your Daddy

Because of the
Love and trust you had
In the truth of his words
You came off
Of that field a star!

You will always be my star Jacob
Thank you for the memory

Love,
Grandma

Whoa yea,
Plenty of memories came flooding back on this piece. When Jeremy was your grandsons age, he got caught in a run down between 1st base and second. The second baseman started to tag him, and Jeremy took off for centerfield. I laughed so hard. He's a beautiful kid, and the words fit perfectly. Rain..

A wonderful poem and wonderfully done. Brought back memories of when my sons started playing baseball. The pictures went well with the poem and the words could have only come from a loving grandparent.
