The girl with the Black Heart

The girl with the Black Heart

A Story by Alewis
"

Sophie has a secret that noone know. she changes twice a month into a monster that feeds and captures the souls of her victims.

"

I grumbled as my alarm clock went off for school. My name is Sophie. I go to Fredrick High. I’m not as tall or pretty as most girls at the school. Sometimes I don’t know how I fit in at high school. I live with my mother and younger sister Savanna.

“Sophie, Sophie, wake up!” Savanna chanted.

“Go away,” I mumbled turning my head away. She wouldn’t stop tugging on my arm so I shouted at her.

“Stop bothering me you little brat!” Savanna’s eyes started to water then the tears came and she ran out my room.

“Ugh just what I needed this morning,” I grumbled to myself. With one more groan, I got up out of bed and prepared myself for school.

On my way down stairs I smelled coffee which meant my mom was in the kitchen. She was dressed for work.

“Why do you always call Savanna names and push her?” she asked. I was not in the mood to hear a lecture.

“She should have gone away like I told her,” I walked away from the table and went to school.

It’s not that big of a school. The population was 1,005 including teachers. I pulled into the student parking lot and parked furthest away from the other cars.  I owned silver Audi.

“Hey Sophie,” Amanda said walking towards me, “Love the outfit.” My outfit was cute; I was wearing black skinnies with a dark red camisole with huge black letters that said “Bite Me.”

“Thanks Amanda,” I told her. We had been friends since the 4th grade which was seven years.

“OMG, major hottie at 12 o'clock!” Amanda whispered. I turned to see who she was talking about and wished I hadn’t. Dante Williams was getting out of a car. He was in the same grade as me and Amanda. Dante was tall and muscular since he was on the school’s football team.

“He is full of himself,” I said looking away.

“What? No way! Sophie, he is so hot!” Amanda squealed.

“Sure Amanda. He flirts with all the girls in school.”

“Not true Sophie, those are rumors just like the ones about you,” She stopped immediately like she said too much. I stood, waiting for her to continue, but she didn’t.

“What rumors? How long have you known and why…?”

“Hey Sophie,” Dante said cutting me off. I didn’t even see him coming our way. I straightened myself and looked at him blankly.

“Oh, hey Dante,” I mumbled walking away from both of them.

“Sophie, wait! I’m sorry, I was going to tell you as soon as I had a good chance,” Amanda said running up behind me.

“Then tell me now, because I’m listening,” I snapped.

“Okay, people have been calling you Black Heart,” Amanda said playing with her hair. I had to think about what she said. I didn’t think people noticed how I acted or what I did. Yeah sometimes I acted like didn’t care about a whole lot of things, but they were wrong. No one knew the truth, not even Amanda.

“You thought that would upset me?” I asked, knowing it did.

“Well I wouldn’t have known,” she admitted.

“You are my best friend. You are supposed to tell me the truth no matter what happens,” I told her calmly. We stared at each other for a moment, and then Amanda broke the silence.

“You’re right, I should have told you the first time I heard it,” she said. I saw the plea for forgiveness in her eyes. How could I stay mad at her for so long, over something so stupid?

“I forgive you Amanda. Let’s hurry up to class before we hear a mouthful from Mr. Turnboil.” She smiled and we went off to class.

We made it on time, but the day managed to drag on very slowly. I was glad to hear the bell ring. I could go home and relax. I was walking to my car when I heard my name. I turned to see who it was. I kind of regret turning around. I was looking at Dante Williams.

“Oh hey Dante,” I backed up just a little.

“Hey, I was just wondering if you wanted to…see a movie with me sometime?” He stood there awkwardly, like he was somewhat nervous.

“Um, sorry, but no I can’t,” I got in the car and drove away without looking back. I couldn’t figure out why Dante of all people would ask me out. I mean I dated a few guys but not like Dante. The “rumors” about me were bad enough and I didn’t need more about me and Dante.

Instead of going to my house, I decided to go to Amanda’s. I got there in less than ten minutes. I don’t want to deal with my mom right now. Amanda wasn’t surprised to see me here. On occasions, when I argued with my mom, I would drive to Amanda’s house.

“So what happened this time?”Amanda asked while I got out the car.

“My mom is complaining about my lack of respect for Savanna,” I said smirking. Amanda’s house was maybe just a bit smaller than mine, but I liked it way better than my house.

“Hey, Ms. Jones,” I greeted on the way to Amanda’s room.

“Hey Sophie.” She called from the other room.

“I like your mom, she is so nice,” I whispered to Amanda. She snorted.

I left Amanda’s house around dusk. It was getting dark and my mom would be looked at the sky and noticed a full moon. Dang! I forgot to mark my calendar for this night. I drove to the outer forest and ran deep into its trees. I knew I was running out of time.

As I ran I felt the pain and knew what was going to happen. I felt my blood pulsing faster through my veins. I was going through the change. The change only came twice a month. When the full moon appears and the darkness of night envelopes the world. My vision started to change and I saw everything more clearly, my body was on fire, pounding. I hated going through the change each month. I was a monster who went around killing and taking the souls right out of people. The pain began to fade and everything was different. I was different. I no longer had emotion. All I wanted was to kill. I got up off the ground and started after my prey.

When I woke up I was laying on my bed covered in blood. All I remember of last night was the pain then nothing. I checked my phone and had ten missed calls. Half from Amanda and my mom. Great, how do I explain what happened? I looked at myself in the mirror and decided I should clean up and hide the evidence. It sucked to keep my biggest secret from Amanda, but it was for her own good. I could already see her running away from me calling me terrible and whatever else she could come up with. I won’t tell her. I think about the rumor of people calling me the girl with the black heart. It does sound like me. I never care if I’m rude or about what others don’t have.

I was looking in the mirror and noticed I had a nasty looking scar on my arm. It looked like it was deep, but now it was a thick red line going down my arm. It’s ashamed how I can’t remember anything that happened last night. I should be use to this since I been this way since I was five. To be honest I don’t think I’m related to my mom.

I needed to find out more about my past. I never met my dad. If only I had a way to find him.

“Sophie, can you come down here for a minute?” my mom called. I put on a long sleeve to hide the scar and went down stairs. My sister Savanna was sitting in front of my mom, watching Shrek. Savanna looked up at me and smiled. I smiled back at her. I went and sat next to my mom.

“Sophie we need to talk.” I was prepared for this.

     “Yea, I guess we do.”

“I think you should know the truth…about you.” I froze and looked at my mom. Where was this coming from?

“Sophie, you were adopted 11 years ago or I should say your dad dropped you off on my porch.”

“Why did you choose to tell me now?” I growled through my teeth. I was furious at this point.

“I thought now would be a good time to tell you,” she looked at me and continued, “Your dad’s name was Henry John Oxford. You look just like him. He told me to give you this once, when I thought you were ready.” She handed me an envelope with my name on it.

“I don’t know what it is,” she said.

“Thanks, I’m going to go get some air,” I walked out to my car and drove as far as I could go.

I ended up in an old parking lot. I opened the envelope and there was a letter explaining what I was. I found out that my mom was killed trying to protect me. My dad made it out with me, but it was too late for my mom. I’m half vampire and human. Because I’m half I change at night, twice a month. I continued reading and then heard a noise. I looked up and saw Dante dragging a body. There was blood. Lots of it. I got out the car and ran towards him. He saw me and froze. We stared at each other.

“What are you doing here?” I asked my voice breaking.

“I…should be asking you that,” he said. He dropped the body and in a flash was standing in front of me. With him this close, two things happened. First I felt this energy from him and it was similar to mine. Second, he bent down and kissed me. This shocked me because I was kissing him back. At this moment it felt that we belonged together. I pulled away and we were both breathing hard.

“You and I are the same,” he said.

“What do you mean ‘the same’?”

“Well first, I am a full blood and you are half blood,” I looked at him blankly, trying to put his words together. He knew what I was because he was the same. Except he was a full blood vampire.

“How can you walk in the light?” I asked because weren’t vamps suppose to burn in the light? He started laughing right in my face. That made me really mad.

“Why are you laughing at me?” I yelled and recoiled. He looked at me and composed himself.

“Do you know what species you are?”

“Um, no I don’t. I just found out I was adopted.”

“So you know basically nothing? How old were you when you first went through the change?” I had to think about it for a minute.

“I was five when I first changed.”I told him. I looked up at him and he looked like I slapped him in the face.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. I forced him to look at me.

“That is the earliest I’ve ever heard that someone changed.” He explained. I thought about the first time I changed. It was a week after my fifth birthday and I went camping. There was a full moon and I’d gone to explore. I heard the laughter of the other kids and I knew they were going to tease me.

“You going to go visit the animals, freak?” the girl asked me. All I remember was being pushed and I got angry. I ended up blacking out and when I woke, the group of kids were dead.

“Is it rare that someone changes that early?” I asked Dante.

“Yea it’s really early. I changed two years ago,” he looked away as if he was remembering something bad. I was shocked to hear that was not an usual thing to happen. I put my hand on his cheek to relax him. He looked at me and smiled.

“Well I’m glad to know I’m not the only one,” I glanced at him and continued, “It’s scary every time I change, I’m afraid it will take over completely.”

“You don’t need to be afraid. It’s who you are,” I took his words and knew he was right.

It seemed to get darker and didn’t notice how late it had become.

“I have to go home now,” I kissed him quickly and ran back to my car. I looked back and he was gone. On my way back to town it started to rain. Ugh, I never did like rainy days or cold ones, even if the temperature never bothered me. I decided to go grab a bite at the local hot spot. It was called “Bismo Teen”. All the teens came here. I got out the car and as I was walking I heard the voices.

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t Little Miss Black Heart,” one voice said. I turned and noticed it was Tanya Jennings and her mod squad. She was just slightly shorter than me with light sandy brown hair. Amanda and I never liked her since we were in middle school and Tanya poured milk down Amanda’s back. Since then, we’ve call Tanya a dirty skank t**d.

“Of course we would find you stumbling around in the dark,” she said. Next, I was surrounded by a group of girls.

“Why don’t you just back the hell off Tanya?” I snapped. I so wasn’t in the mood for her crap right now. All I wanted was to enjoy a burger and smoothie. The first punch came from nowhere and I was on the ground. I was getting jumped and I really couldn’t do much. I was starting to feel anger all over and knew I would snap. Someone hit me in the gut and then…it happened so fast.

It seemed that getting hit in the gut was like some type of ‘on’ button and the next thing I know, I feel the change. I shouldn’t be feeling this way so soon. The girls had stopped their punching and started backing away quickly. My body felt way different from the other changes as if I was becoming something better, I opened my eyes and couldn’t believe what I saw. My whole body was glowing black and I started to rise off the ground. The girls had run inside the club to tell people. I was changing and becoming a full blood. I was back on the ground, furious at everything. I was hungry and there was a club full of blood pumping people. I turned to see a group of people starting to gather around me.

“Sophie?” it was Amanda’s voice that stood out from the others.

“Sophie…what happened to you?”She asked. Amanda was nothing to me right now.

“This is who I am!” I hissed at her.

     “How?”

“I have always been like this!” I was starving to kill and was done with these questions. I turned away from her and grabbed the first boy I saw. Everyone started screaming and running like a herd of zebras. My victim screamed as I bit into his neck. The blood was warm and delicious. When I was done, I collected his wandering soul. Getting up, I noticed Amanda was still standing there, watching me. I could not tell if she was scared or not. In less than a second, I was right in front of her.

“I’m not afraid of you Sophie. You’re my best friend.” She showed no sign of fear. It did not matter to me anymore. I took hold of her and bit her. Her scream was music to my ears as it faded slowly until there was no sound. I took her soul and went to finish my hunt. I left her now useless body behind.

I woke up to the morning sun shining down on me. I was in a room that had a lot of band posters on the wall. I saw a figure sitting in a chair and tensed up until I recognized Dante.

“You’re up,” he said giving me a soft smile.

“What happened last night?” I tried to remember, but I just couldn’t.

“I’ll show you,” I stared blankly until he turned the news on. There were two bodies on gurneys and they gave the names. When I saw Amanda’s name I busted into tears. How could I kill my best friend? Dante’s arms were around me in less than a second.

“Shh, it’s okay Sophie.” He crooned. I was so disgusted with myself. I could not live in a world where Amanda didn’t exist. I got up from Dante’s arms and he looked worried. I had to do this.

“Dante will you kill me?” his face twisted in disgust,

“No, I can’t Sophie, it would happen and you knew that! I’m not going to lose you!”

“Dante you don’t understand. I can’t live without Amanda,” I broke into sobs, praying he would understand. There was something I should do. I was not dying a virgin. I know it sounds weird but I’m dead serious.

“But there is one thing I’ve wanted to do,” I said moving closer to him.

“Sure, whatever you want,” I started to kiss him and we fit perfectly like pieces of a puzzle. I managed to get his shirt off and he let me. I knew he wanted this too. He wanted to make love to me before he took my life. We didn’t pause at all this morning.

Later on that day he took me to the spot I found him yesterday. The deal was: he would shoot me then light me on fire. I was ready for this.

“Here we are,” there was no emotion in his tone, “are you sure you want to go through with this?” I could only nod. I got out of the car and walked a few paces away from it. Dante was right behind me. I turned to look at him one last time. He bent down to kiss me once more. The tears began. He raised the gun against my heart.

“I love you, he said tears coming down.

“I love you more,” I smiled weakly. He pulled the trigger and I saw the match. I was going to see my friend soon.

This was a very interesting story. Their were a few things missing in feelings to me though but, other then that this was a very good and touching story. You basically wrote a book into a wonderful story and for I that I say well done with all that happened from the change, friendship, and love. It was a very good story and I'm happy it all ended well. Excellent job.

Gosh, this was wonderful. I could relate to the mean girls and arrogant boys, but not vampires , though, haha. Very nice read. I really didn't expect her to kill her best friend and then die herself! Nice twists(:
