Take Me to the Altar

Take Me to the Altar

A Poem by Ashley Dawn Proctor

Take Me to the Altar
By: Ashley Proctor

Take me to the altar and let me pray,
God relieve me from my sins and guide me the right way.
I haven't be as good as I needed to be,
Lift me up and show me the track that's best for me.

For I have sinned and I'm confessing them to you my Lord,
I know you will forgive me and help me soar.
Knowing you are here and you will forgive,
In Jesus Christ I will live.

As my tears flow down my face and I beg for mercy,
Jesus is all I need and want to see.
I know I did wrong and I need your love,
You're my Savior and I know you will lift me up.

As the preacher puts his hands on me and says a prayer,
I know God will work through us both to make it better.
When I walk away from the altar and back to my seat with a smile on my face,
I'll look up to Heaven and thank God for His grace.

This is beautiful. Though targeted toward Christianity, the poem conveys the emotions sprung forth from every person's spirituality and the ruminations they undergo because of it. Lovely read, I can just imagine this being shared to a congregation and them identifying with it as it helps them come to terms with their faith. Wonderful job!
