Why Did We Ever Meet

A poem about understanding why I had to let go of a guy who broke my heart.

Maybe I held onto you so tightly

Because you reminded me of my father

Never there

But always filled with half-assed excuses

Thousands of empty promises

When you were there it was wonderful

Everything I could have imagined

Something I thought I wanted to hold onto

Until I realized

You can’t continue to water a dead flower

And you don’t have to fight the people that want to be in your life

To stay present in it

And just like my father

You never truly wanted to be here

In the first place

I had to let you go
