Prologue

A Chapter by Ashleigh Smith

It was warm but breezy that summer night in New York, New York. It had been 4:30 in the morning, just about the only time that NYC calmed down. It was an eerie night, windy but warm, silent but loud. If I was to listen closely that night I could have heard the steps following sooner, whereas the only thing I had heard was the echo of the silent night, what I had thought to be empty of all but my footsteps making its way to my apartment. As I had walked to my apartment building I finally heard someone behind me. At that moment, in the quiet streets, the extra pair of steps was quite unusual. I had stopped to listen to the footsteps, in that exact moment the other pair had stopped. I continued to walk, the steps continued to follow. I had turned around and saw no one behind me so never thought of it to be weird, just had put it as an echo, or my imagination. When I had finally gotten to my apartment I had taken a shower. When I got out I had heard my front door open and then close. I dressed quickly and grabbed my stuff so I could head out to the fire escape and call the only number that had came to mind.

“Hello, Emergency Services. How can I help you?”

“Hello. I was in my apartment and getting out of the shower when I heard my front door open and close,”

“May I have your address please?”

“Yes. It is, 181st west, building 590 apartment 6IR,”

“Okay we will send someone to your needs right away,”

“Okay, Thank you,” and that had been the last time that I heard from anyone in New York City. The last day I was alive, the last day that anything happened for my life. That had been the final day that I, Rain Marie Robinson lived. I was 22 when I was raped and then murdered. I’m going to tell you my story and how, even if it sounds impossible, my quest to come back to life was finished.
