A Chapter by Ashley Rachelle

“Aubrey wait!” Jace screams as I shove my way pass the vamps. I heard hisses and fangs returning but I didn't care. I just wanted out of this hell hole. I finally made it to the door and was stopped by one of the Vampira. The main girl who had been speaking, she was standing in front of me within minutes microphone and all. “Well well, who is this. I believe you're the only human in the building.” She explains walking closer to me. I stood my ground “Get out of my way.” Laughing she responded “This isn't your turf, be careful what you say little one.” I walk up to her closer till we were an inch away from each other. “Get. Out. Of. My. WAY.” The Vampira snapped her head sideways and smirked. “You're on our turf now. The treaty is off.” she said lunging to my neck. “Kate! No!” I faintly heard Jace scream but it was too late the fangs had already pierced through the skin, I was going to die I thought as my eyelids closed.

The bite was painful, a hot sting entered my veins and explored my body. I felt like I was on fire and living though it. I was screaming in agony felt my bones breaking beneath me. It was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life, at that point I was just hoping I would die. Finally my breathing slowed and my heart stopped.

My eyelids opened and harsh light entered my vision. I couldn't see but I could hear someone whimpering. A male, Jace! I rushed to get up and the next thing I new my body was hitting the wall. I fell, went limp but my vision came back. Jace rushed to me wiping his eyes and smiling. “You're alive! Aubrey! I was so worried. I I thought I lost you forever.” Jace exclaimed throwing himself against my body. What seemed like a hug turned into a kiss and then I felt it. I knew what had happened.

I shoved him off and he hit the brick wall. I didn't want to break the kiss, the kiss was much more deep and sensitive than it had been with others but my anger took over. “Are you f*****g kidding me!” I exclaim walking toward him. “Aubrey I can explain.” he said putting his hand up to stop me. “You made me a f*****g vampire!” I said strutting from across the room. Jace looks up “I didn't do it Aubrey! You're body rejected the kill and changed you! Its a miracle!” Finally I kneel in front of him. “A miracle? I would have rather died.” Jace grabbed my shoulders and stared into my eyes. I stared at his grimy hands touching my shoulder. “No touching?” He asked. I answered his question with my face. “No? Ok that is a no.” he said quickly moving his hands off my shoulders to his lap. “Aubrey I know this isn't what you wanted, and that you're mad. But it's a miracle you survived. No one has ever survived the change when it was meant for a kill. They say you're the one in the oracle.” he explained. “Jace. I'm not special. I'm just Aubrey! That’s it and now I'm not even that. You took that away from me.” I said standing up. “Aubrey I know it's hard. I went though the transition. You aren't used to the changes yet, you've only been out for two weeks.” he replied. “Two weeks! What about school? What about taking care of my family!?” I interrupted. “Chill, it's fine I talked to the school and they are letting you miss, I dropped. You don't need to go to school anymore, and honestly you aren't ready to go back yet. And I took care of you're mom, I got her a month worth of groceries alcohol not included. When the others realized you were changing, they brought you here. We are in the clinic at Flood. (Flood is the vampire “campus”, most vampires stay and live on the premises). They have nursed you back to health. They said they have never seen this happen before and that you're very strong. You went though most of the transition at once and within two weeks. Aubrey it took me a month to transition.” he said. I looked at him. “You kept this from me for a month?” I asked.

“I didn't know how you would respond. I couldn't have you leave, you're my best friend. Bree you didn't know it but you got me though the transition.”

“ I can't believe you didn't tell me. You're body could have rejected. You could have died!”

“I knew I wouldn't, I was born to be a vamp. I was born to be a shadow.”

“A SHADOW VAMPIRE! That’s what you are? Are you kidding me? Please tell me you are joking!” I pleaded as Jace looked at me defeated. A shadow is a type of vampire that hunts the ones who have wronged their race, they are the protectors. Shadows are called shadows because they are always near but you never see them coming until its too late. It's like they are your shadow, they blend in with you. They are a mix between bounty hunters and soldiers. They are paid for their services and are treated like royalty. They have to be chosen to be a shadow and are the celebrities of the vampire world.

Our worlds are collided. Vampires and humans walk with each other. There is no discrimination, humans have vampire friends. There used to be a war between the two species but they decided to end it due to all the deaths and create a treaty instead. The treaty states that vampires and humans will not harm each other because of their race if stayed on their own land. However, if a human agrees or volunteers, a vampire can bite them. Vampires and humans can go to school and work together but living together and sensual or personal relationships are forbidden. The reason is because when vampires have sex they usually bite each other and a bite to a human can be toxic and is against the treaty. Also, vampires and humans being friends causes an issue as well due to the fact most human families look down on it. Vampires can repopulate but only if they are both vampires. When Kate (the main Vampira) bit me, it was not against the treaty. I had come to their own club knowing the outcomes and in everyone's eyes that was my fault. Kate was the leader of the Vampiras as I found out later. Vampira is a group of girls under the Shadows. Shadows are mostly males and Vampiras are mostly females. They get the same perks but Vampiras are for entertainment. They sing, dance, act, and even create shows and stories. They are the rulers of the clubs and the cheerleaders of the vampires. There are only two other categories you can fall into, the Mims and the Ires. The mims are the nurses and the ires are the caretakers of their food and blood.

“Enough about me, Bree it's time for you to find out what you're here for. In order to see what your purpose is, you have to see which category you fall into.” Jace explained. I sighed. “I don't want a job, I don't want this.” I say. Jace turns to me “Look I'm sorry you didn't die but this is who you are now. You have to have this inspection done to see where you fall. They aren't going to hurt you they are just going to take some tests both physical and mental.”

Jace walks me out of the room and into a hallway. Narrow and long, I struggle to make it down the dark path. Candles were lit but no lights were on, my eyes strained to see the path and started to hurt. I grab my eyes in pain and Jace holds my waist. “You'll get used to it, your eyes are still adjusting.” Jace explains as we make it to a red door. “This is as far as I can go but I'll be right outside the door.” he says and I clutch onto his bare arm. I didn't notice before but Jace wasn't wearing sleeves, just a white tank top with black pants. He comes in close and lays his head on my hair and murmurs “I'm not going anywhere. I promise. You'll be fine. Each V has to go individually, you're safe.” Jace lets go of me and sits next to the door and smiles “Go Bree, I'm waiting.” Smiling I slap him in the head and walk through the door as I hear him say “Damn Bree that f*****g hurt.” Forgot about my new strength, oops.

Inside the room was bright, my eyes continued to hurt as a group of vamps stood around me. “Hello...Bree?” a man holding a clipboard says. “It's Aubrey.” I say as I take a seat, my lips settled in a line.

“Bree, we have a few-”

“Aubrey.”

“Aubrey...we have a few tests we need to do. We need to take some blood but we will do that after the mental test. I'm going to need you to put this on.” the doctor said handing me a set of headphones. “What is this? Why do I need to put them on?” I ask. “The headphones you wear will take you though a series of challenges and memories. Some even fears, the way you finish the test will place you in one of the four categories. The results will be ready by tomorrow. Don't worry the test is not dangerous and nothing is real, you will not be hurt during this test.” he explains. I put the headphones on and take a breath.

Water fills into my lungs. I can't breathe my head was being held into a bathtub full of water. Panic arises and I'm about to pass out when suddenly the pressure is gone and air rushes into my lungs. As I gasp for air against the bathtub of my doom, two figures are fighting in front of me. One in all black and one in all white, both male. The blurry figures become more clear and I can tell one of the men is Jace. Jace is in all white, white pants and a white tank top. He shoves the guy in all black against a wall and holds him up where he can't touch the ground. Until a third figure walks in and pushes a knife though Jace's heart. Blood trickles down his faded white tank as I scream his name. I try to get up and run to him but the blurry third figure runs over to me. This third figure was in all black as well with a hood covering his face. The bloody knife he has is pointed at me to keep me in my spot. He grabs his hood and reveals himself. Fangs and all, it was Jace.

I'm falling down a shaft. The floor from underneath me in the bathroom had disappeared like a trap door. I hit the hard ground and cough. I crawl out of a tiny hole to realize I'm in my house's chimney. I make it out and fall onto the living room floor. I look over and see two people screaming at each other and a baby laying in a crib next to them. One was a female while the other was a male, the male had a gun in his hand and was waving it around. The baby is awake and looks frightened and I crawl over to it careful the parents do not see me. I pick up the baby wrapped in a pink blanket and run out their front door. I make it outside where it is deserted and gray. I turn around to the house and watch as a gunshot is fired and blood plasters the window. I run with the baby scared the people will chase after us. I look down into the innocent bright blue eyes and continue to run.

I run until I make it to a door. The only thing I was able to find, no houses were unlocked and no one was outside. Figures stood in the windows and watched as I ran with this child trying to find shelter. I open the door and slammed it behind me. Turning away from the door, I see a club. Vamp. The baby has transformed into a cat which I drop out of fear. I runs away and into the arms of a vampire. I hear the cat's hiss and whimper as I stumble though the club. I look at the person holding me and realize it's the host of the Vampira Show I saw with Jace two weeks ago. He wore the same outfit and smelled musky. He lifted me up and pulled me close to dance, we started dancing and he started kissing my neck. For some reason I knew we were in public but I didn't care. I could feel his fangs on my neck but I wasn't scared. I could feel my mouth tensing up and pain in my gums. My fangs were being released.

He took my hand and pulled me past the stage where the Vampira Show was going on. We walked past pink fluorescent sheets, intended for privacy. He pushed past one of the sheets and closed it behind him. He lowered me down on a black leather couch and I let it happen. The kissing the touching was all a blur. I didn't know exactly what was happening but I liked it. It escalated quickly and then it was happening. Sex with a vampire. My first time with a vampire. All of a sudden I didn't like it anymore. I realized what was happening and tried to push him off, he wouldn't budge and I started to feel pain. Finally I shoved him with all my strength but he still wouldn't get off. My heart started racing, I couldn't breath and then I heard a voice. The voice was loud and clear but in my head. “It's not real Bree, it's not real. This isn't happening, you aren't hurt.” the voice explained. “It's not real!” I screamed as my eyes opened and pulled the headphones off.

Wide eyes and blank stares entered my vision as I got out of the chair and went though the doors. “We still need to take blood!” the doctor screamed as I shut the door behind me. Jace looks up, “That rough huh?”

“I don't want to talk about it, I'm starving.” I say. Jace gets up and smiles “Me too, do you want to get some food?” he asks. “No, I just want you.” I say as I slam him against the wall and bite his neck. He screams in agony. My eyes open.

The doctor and all the other vamps look at me with puzzled looks. “No one has ever finished that fast, you my dear are special. I just need to take some blood and then you are free to go.” he explains and wipes a tear from my eyes. “I didn't know V's could cry.” I say and he smiles and responds “They don't.”
