Loi Krathong

Loi Krathong

A Poem by Annis Saniee

Tonight the Big Buddha has stone cold eyes

In the fluorescent light the full moon provides.

I wandered here. Thick exhaust

Trails from sapphire smiles I left behind

Like taffy pulled from their arms. They are empty;

In their absence I wane limpid and fine.

It is not quiet. Flags clank poles

Like gongs and motorbikes growl. Even geckos

Shriek in tongues I can’t understand. Though they do not move,

Her eyes, the Buddha, are anything but still. I am being watched.

My fingers clutch at scraggly paper fringes

They scribbled when they were most alone. Resentments and regrets; even fear of the dark.

She is a towering black figure wearing a golden crown.

Behind her a bridge where fireflies go

In great, swarming crowds. Incense lures.

Tonight I will swim inward.

How many hands have sent candles to the river?

The water shimmers a thousand stars.

My note floats softly in the shade of the orchid tree.

It is surrounded by so many lights.

This emptiness is buoyant --- throw it to the void.

We are so much light in this great expanse.
