Lucien opened his eyes because there was a loud obnoxious banging on the door. “Oh, come on. Get up! It couldn’t have been that bad, could it?” Yumah had been pounding out there for five minutes and he had just ignored her. “Get up!” she shouted. He could tell she was full of energy and not as shy as the night before.

“Fine! Where’s the shower?” Lucien flopped out of his bed and onto the floor. “Shhhsss. Ahhhh. That hurts. Gah. My back.”

“What did you do? Did you just fall? Do you need help?”  Yumah started panicking on the other side of the door.

“What’s the matter with you? I fall all the time. It’s just this time I was closer to the ground,” he said as he got up from the floor, diverting his wings out of the way of the night stand.

“Sorry, I’m just hungry, and when I don’t eat, I get like this. By the way the bath tub is 24 doors to your right. Take your time in there. You have clothes in the closet.”  There was a pause. “I’ll go now.”

Lucien walked to the closet and pulled open the door. He grabbed the first shirt, pair of pants, socks, and boxers he saw. He didn’t really care if the matched or not. He turned his head to the left to view himself in the mirror. Grey eyes. Lucien shut the door, yet again, not caring. For him, this was way too early to be up.

The bathroom had black tile on the walls and floor. The was a long counter with a mirror just as long. It was only now that he noticed his back and new wings were soaked in his blood and so were his pants. He stripped himself of them and his boxers for the blood had soaked through and covered them.

He started walking toward the extremely, over sized tub but stopped in his tracks. He turned on his heel and locked the door. A smile of accomplishment came to his face. No one would be able to see him exposed.

He continued to the square tub. There was fresh, hot water in it already.       ‘ Yumah must have already known,’ he thought. He smiled to him self. Then walked over to a shelf which held what looked like a cd player. There was a cd in it, so all he did was hit ‘play’; turning it on and sending the sound of a piano part of  “The Portrait”  throughout the air. Lucien returned to the bath and submerged himself in the water.

That water stung his back, cleaning and sanitizing his shoulder blades and wings. Lucien surfaced. The water around him became red with blood, but only for a mere moment. Then it was crystal clear, just like before.

He paid no mind to it.  He had seen far weirder things than a self cleaning bath tub. He sank himself below the water again, closing his wings and releasing them open again. The first few times his muscles screamed in protest, but they soon accepted it. The pain decreased and it became natural.

He surfaced again gasping for air. Once he caught his breath, he finished washing up. When he reached the end of the tub to get out, his right wing twitched, sending water all over the walls and floor. He decided to fold in his wings, this way they could do less damage.

Yumah was out on the balcony again. She brought her left palm to her mouth to wipe away the blood of her victim. She did not kill this man for he had a wife and two kids that he loved dearly. And she would not be a monster and murderer when it was unneeded. She fed herself twice as much as normal, knowing she would have to feed Lucien for he hadn’t learned to hunt.

She sighed and  sat on the railing patiently waiting for Lucien. Her gaze going over the city. ‘Had that day never happened’, she thought, ‘but of course it would have, God will not budge on his plans. But why in that manner, Lord? Hadn’t I been through enough? She shook her head, banishing the thoughts that were coming into her head. Changing her focus to the  Belle Chanson flying across the sky in silence. ‘You poor bird’ she thought.

‘Bird? When did I think of a bird?’ came the familiar voice of Lucien, only he didn’t think it aloud, Yumah picked up his thoughts. A minute later he walked through the doorway of the balcony with no shirt on but in his hands staring at it. Once he passed the door frame his released his wings, letting the cool night air blow on them. Yumah stared wide eyed at him. “I need a knife,” he said, “to cut holes for my wings or other wise it’s pointless to wear it.”  He looked up from his hands and looked at Yumah and saw her staring, “What?” he asked.

“When did you get those?” she nodded toward his left wing.

“Last night.”

“They’re beautiful,” she stared at them even more, dragging he eyes all over them with fascination.

Lucien walked toward her, tossing his shirt to the ground, and stopped in front of her, his face in front of hers, “Not even close to you.” Yumah blushed as he took her left hand and put its palm to his mouth, licking off the blood that was once on her own with a gentle kiss.

Yumah’s heart began to race, and she was sure he could hear it. And if he did, he didn’t seem to care. He caught her eyes with his own. His red eyes, hungry and serious. “Y-you need....you need to feed, “she stammered. Afraid of what might happen.

Lucien let go of her hand, which fell limply into her lap, Lucien still held her memorized with his eyes. He stepped even closer to her, wrapping his one arm around her waist, the other to the back of her neck; rubbing her jaw with his thumb.

Butterflies attacked Yumah’s stomach as he bent his head to hers. His silk like hair brushing the side of her face as his cheek brushed hers and his lips found her jaw. His breath hot on her skin as he made a small trail of kisses from her jaw to her mid neck. The blush on her face grew hotter.

“Do not fear me,” he mumbled against her neck. He gripped her tighter around the waist, pulling her closer to him. His fangs came to their full length. They scraped gently at her skin. His tongue found her frantically beating pulse.

He smiled a little, “What did I say?” he kissed her neck again, “relax, it’s not scary remember?”

This was how it was supposed to be. Or a least that’s how it felt. Lucien broke the skin, blood flowing into him. Yumah put her hands to his bare chest in protest but didn’t push him back for she knew he must feed somehow. And if not her, who?  Gabriel? That would be vary awkward for them both. No, she would do this until he learned feed on his own, it was the least she could do.

Lucien stopped the blood flow to him and pulled his head up to look at Yumah. Her green eyes were wide with fear, her cheeks a deep pink. She pushed at his chest but he wouldn’t budge. “What?” she asked.

“Why are you so afraid?” his eyes pierced her soul.

She looked down, “Had you been there, you would know.”

He then stepped away, releasing her.

Yumah bent her head down further, her hair blocking his view of her face that was stained a bright red, and she was shaking. Lucien instinctually moves to her once again. Yumah held up her hand, shaking like the rest of her body, and said, “Don’t. I’ll be fine. Just go meet Gabriel.”

Lucien still went to her and tilted her face to his, “I am sorry.”

Yumah shut her eyes and jerked from his hand. “Please! Just go.” Her breath becoming raged with her soul hurting.

A hand touched his shoulder from behind. He turned and saw a woman with long blood red hair. “She’ll be fine. Just leave her with me,” said the woman.

“I-I didn’t-” he stammered.

She smiled to him, “I know, Gabriel will explain. Now go.”

Lucien turned his head to Yumah. Her head was bowed again, looking to no one. He then returned his head to the woman again. Then he left them, to meet Gabriel. On his way through the house, he cursed at himself for putting her through that. He would find a way to apologize to her, without scaring her. Somehow. But he didn’t know where to even start. Gabriel, he would know for they had probably been friends for years.

When Lucien stepped outside, Gabriel was there, sitting on the steps; his back to Lucien. He turned and looked at him. “What is wrong? I felt her discomfort. Is she okay?”

Lucien shook his head, “They only problem was me.” He passed Gabriel and started walking down the street, tucking his wing to his back.

Gabriel got up from the stairs and went after him. He followed in step beside him and asked, “What happened?”

“You can read minds, figure it out!”

Gabriel was silent a moment. Then said, “It wasn’t your fault, you know.”

Lucien stopped and stared at him. “Not my fault! Then what ? It’s yours?”

“No.”

“Then who’s?”

“God’s,” Gabriel said blankly. “God knows what He is doing. Just listen to him.” Gabriel paused a moment, sadness filling his eyes. “And she was nowhere near ready.”

“For what?” Lucien had calmed down after this.

“Around this time a year ago is when it happened to her. She came home from school just like any other day. She thought she would come home to her mother and father doing things around the house. Instead, she walked into the kitchen to find her parents lying on the tile floor dead. Blood was flung everywhere. Their skin was pure white and slashed  every which way. She fell to the floor and cried her eyes out.”

Gabriel took a couple deep breaths, and continued “Then a vampire  by the name of Savaric, appeared behind her. He beat her bloody, hitting and clawing at her till she ran out of energy to fight him off, and he viciously  raped her. After that, he drank most of her blood, leaving to die with her parents.

‘I had heard her cries from over the sea.  Loud and clear as if she was shouting in my head. So I ran to her, swimming the ocean between us. For she lived in the U.S., and I in France. When I got there, she was barely breathing and pale. When she saw me, she tried to protest by shaking her head and saying no repeatedly. She was scared out of her wits. So I convinced her I would not hurt her, and took her to a friend that lived in the area, Adien. There, we tried to keep her alive, but we had no other choice. If she wished to live, she would become that of which killed her parents and almost her. One night I put her to sleep and injected the venom. At first, she was so angry with me, but then she realized she would have more time. She  swore to God that she would only stay a vampire long enough to kill Savaric and then she would step into the sun and end her life.”
