The World to Me

I wrote this poem for my nephews who are 4 years, and almost 7 months.

 

 

 

 

THE WORLD TO ME

The world is so big, and I am so small.

It is very scary, and I know nothing at all.

Will you teach me, mommy, will you show me, dad?

What is this, and what is that?

That is a block, and this is a ball…

“Be careful, my darling,” you say. “Don’t fall.”

 

Out in the yard, so much to see;

my goodness, a sunflower…taller than me!

What is this? It’s red and green,

the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

My mommy says “That’s a rose.”

as she gently holds it to my nose.

 

A “woof”, a “meow”…oh my, what’s that?

That is a doggy, and that is a cat.

Water from a hose, the feeling of sand,

I carefully explore as I hold your hand.

My daddy stands there, his love I see,

as he laughs, and watches me.

 

We go to the park and you show me the trees;

pointing to ducks, and birds, and bees.

I see a playground with a slide,

and mommy lifts me for a ride.

A see-saw, a swing, a merry-go-round…

oh, there is so much fun to be found!

 

We visit Granny and Grandpa on the farm,

and they show me the animals in the barn.

Some say “moo” and some say “neigh”,

some eat oats and others eat hay.

A cow, a horse, a piggy, too,

a rooster crowing “c**k-a-doodle-doo!”

 

Granny takes me into the house…she’s making pie!

It smells so yummy and I sigh.

She helps me fill the dough with fruit,

adding cinnamon and ginger root.

An orange in a bowl is sitting near,

and soon I’m sticky from ear-to-ear.

 

One day daddy said “Let’s go to the zoo!”

I know there’ll be so much to do.

Cotton candy and ice cream to eat…

I’m so excited, I squirm in my seat.

Monkeys, giraffes, and polar bears to see,

a big grey elephant raising his trunk at me.

 

The world is so big, but my family

helps me with every discovery.

So much to see, so much to learn,

so much to do at every turn.

So many wonders, and I smiled

as I see the world through the eyes of a child.

 

 

 

Author's Note

This poem didn't take me long to write, and it's addressed to children as well as parents. I hope you enjoy it.
