A Big Drop of Luck

A Big Drop of Luck

A Story by Artūras Knopkus
"

A short story about a 12-year old yellow ball.

"

When I was 12 years old, I was a yellow ball. I was light and soft but all the other balls that were around me were dark and heavy. They were all sad and angry. I was happy and everyone liked to play with me. Once, when it was a cold summer day, a little boy took me and threw me into a bush of roses. The air inside me went out, and this stage of my life ended.

Then I became a big, big lamp. A street lamp in the city centre. I was like every other lamp, but what distinguished me from the others was a small button above my left leg.

You know, a funny thing happened on October the 12th. It was late, and all the lamps were on. A beautiful woman was walking down the street and then she saw me. I don't know why and how, but she pushed my button and fell in love with me. Then I started to burn and then I became a chariot. The woman jumped in, and I took her to the sea.

It was windy, so I turned myself into a warm plaid and she wrapped herself up with me. It became warm and cozy. We were together 'till the morning. When the sun came up, she suddenly vanished.

For some reason, I felt happy. I was so lucky, I thought to myself. Some time later, I turned myself into a drop of water. A boy was stopped near me, and when he saw me, he drank me.

I was still there. I am still there.
