Paper and Pen

I don't like people...

Paper and pen,

How I love what you bring:

A clean sheet of new beginnings.

Not like these people

Who bring heart racing grief,

The anxiety and fear,

The infuriating discomfort.

Paper and pen,

How I love your silence.

You listen to my every word.

Not like these people

Who talk only of themselves,

Their pain and their pleasure

The “Me! Me! Me!” song that I hate.

Paper and pen,

How I love your devotion.

You’re always nearby when I call.

Not like these people

Whose presence is sporadic,

Making appearances when I’m already down,

Laughing as they kick me repeatedly.

Paper and pen,

I’m so glad we're friends.

There’s no way you would ever desert me.

I liked this poem. It sort of defines what it's like to be a writer. To have that connection to the paper and pen which can be stronger than connection with other people. At least it defines my identity as a writer. It's like an ode without calling it an ode. Maybe instead of directly addressing paper and pen throughout, leave it just in the title and the rest of the poem could be addressing paper and pen as "you." Also you could address pen and paper first and how much you like their company and then end with why you don't like the other people. I still like the end where you say "there's no way you would desert me." That ending was good. Good job! :)

It is the one thing that I cannot stand about society. "Me! Me! Me!" it all anyone is focused on and they never take time to see the person sitting next to them, if they do it is only cursory and often a look of disdain. I love this one. Putting it in my library. 100 for sure.

I think the thought of "I don't like people" is how I got through high school, to be honest. Reading this poem, every reason I ever came up with to not like people was brought back to light! Writing is something that we'll always have and will always be with us and for that I am truly thankful! A very nice poem that definitely was nostalgic :)

Thank you very much. I'm not sure if the 2nd vs is so much a rant anymore. When I fist posted it the last stanza was kind of out there. I was really angry when I first wrote this, but MOMZILLA calmed me down and I was able to write a more poetic rant :P
