Finally Free

Finally Free

A Poem by Briana O'Connor
"

A poem about my battle from an active drunk to a recovering, spiritual being.

"

A love insincere,

I felt it...

When you were near.

You held me so tightly,

A grip..

Most frightening.

I clawed at your hands,

Attempted...

To resist your demands.

I longed to break free,

To be rid of misery.

Alas...

A breeze reached my soul.

Inspiring me...

To fight your control.

Diagnosed with Alcoholism...

Providing a key...

An escape...

From your narcissism.

A love surrounding me...

I listened to the herd.

Experience, strength and hope...

Lingered in every word.

Hopeless no more,

I chose another door.

I walked through it with hope,

Sent my sins away...

In an envelope

Recovery...

Has set me free.

Allowing me…

To just sit back and be.

One day at a time,

I'm not afraid of the climb.

“Let go and let God”...

Joining the rest of the squad.

Together we stand,

Forever in God’s command.

thank you very much for you kind words.
I've dated a couple of alcoholics. Fun at first but eventually bad news. They can only help themselves, you can't force a cure on an addict

This poem captivated me.... this poem reveals the most hardest parts you had to escape from in life. I enjoyed reading this interesting poem and I love the way you ended this poem with freedom.

thank you very much. recovery is a difficult journey, but the results are totally worth it.
I know from whence this came and the pain it speaks of in alcoholism. I know the damage it can to self, friends, family, career, everything. Though I am not an alcoholic myself, I know of what I speak because of what I went through when my mother was deep into her addiction. Now she is in recovery and I have my mother back. I am thankful for that beyond measure. Very good write my friend. I can identify

It is liberating to break that cycle, and to become free and strong. A good piece of writing about a difficult subject.
