Chapter Three; Cold Toes

Ryan woke up to the sound of his alarm blaring in his ear, he laid in bed for awhile before getting up to eat breakfast. He had a quick meal of Reese’s Puffs and a cup of orange juice, he brushed his teeth several times before getting on his suit and tie. He looked in the mirror and smiled, his teeth almost glimmering. He then got a call, he walked over to his bed to see who it was, it was Lucy.

His hand shivered until he gained the courage to pick it up, “Hello?” he answered shyly. “Hi it’s Lucy! Are you still coming to the ice cream place?” she replied. “Yeah, I’m on my way right now.” Ryan said. “Great, see you soon!” then Lucy hung up. Ryan took a deep breath and walked downstairs to say goodbye to his mother. She kissed him goodbye, and he set off. On his first day of summer. Ryan walked down the street, sweating in his warm suit. He should have worn a tee-shirt. Ryan saw the ice cream place in the distance, he walked a little faster just in case Lucy was already there.

“Hi!!” Ryan jumped and turned around. “Oh! Hi Lucy,” he replied. “Why are you wearing a suit?” she asked. Ryan examined Lucy and realized she was wearing a tank top and jeans. Ryan blushed, “Long story,” he said quietly. They arrived at the ice cream shop and knocked on the glass doors. They had to arrive an hour early so they could go through a bit of training. An employee walked by and unlocked the doors, “Hello kids!!!” he said excitedly. “Hello!” they both replied as they walked in.

The ice cream place was cold, and Ryan was relieved. They both walked behind the counter to get started training. They learned how to use the ice cream machine and how to work the register. After training the employee said, “I have to run a few errands, if there is an emergency please call me.” then he handed them his number and walked out.

They were now alone, no one was there for a long time, so they had nothing to do. Finally, a half an hour later, a customer walked in, and he did not look happy. Lucy worked the counter while Ryan worked the machines.”How are you today sir,” Lucy asked. “Not well young lady, I ordered some ice cream from your place yesterday and I saw a fly in my ice cream!!”

Lucy didn’t know what to do, “I’m sorry sir, can I get you a new one?” She asked. “No Ma'am.” He said angrily, “I would like a refund.” Lucy checked behind her and saw a big sign that said No Refunds. “I’m sorry sir, but we do not give refunds, I can guarantee you that if we make you another ice cream, it will not have a fly inside it.” “Fine” he grunted. Lucy looked at the ice cream he held and it said Rocky Road on the cup.

Lucy wrote down rocky road on a piece of paper, and went into the ice cream room to give it to Ryan. Ryan looked at the 20 machines and on one machine Rocky Road on one. He grabbed the handle to dispense the ice cream, but on the handle there was a small sign that read “Out Of Order” Ryan went back to Lucy to tell her it was out of order.

Lucy went back to the old man to tell him that there was no rocky road, but he was gone. “Hello?” Lucy called out, no one answered. Ryan came out to ask what was taking so long. He saw Lucy looking around and decided to help after five minutes of looking Ryan thought to check the security cameras to see where he went. Ryan skimmed through the footage to see that the man took money from the register and left.

Ryan didn’t know what to do so he asked Lucy, and she decided to call the police. “911 what is your emergency,” said the operator on the other line, “Hello my name is Lucy, my friend and I are volunteering at Cold Toes and our store just got robbed.” Lucy then told them the address and hung up. They waited at the store until the police came. They skimmed the area and told them that they had to go home. Ryan and Lucy walked home at around 11 am, they lived close so they talked the whole way home. Ryan got to his house and said goodbye to Lucy. He walked inside to see his mother crying on the phone and his dad staring at the T.V. Ryan and Lucy were on T.V.
