1. Ground FloorA Chapter by Arslan ZaidiOpening and Introduction. The clock was striking 0800 hrs. but Dr. Richard Smith was
still asleep. It was a big day for him. He had been working for 20 hours a day
for the last 5 months. But yesterday night, he had decided not to set the wake
up alarm. He was exhausted. He had been craving for a day to relax, refresh and
rejoice his success and finally that day had come which was going to make him
rejuvenate. Dr. Smith was a man in his early 40s. His silvery black
short hair, a broad forehead, deep hazel eyes, a muscular structure along with
a more than medium stature gave him a scholarly yet attractive look. His long
routine of continuous work had developed wrinkles around his eyes. Anyone with
even a slight sense of analyzing personalities through physical appearance
could guess that he was a sort of person who is determined and committed
towards his goals and has an intellectual part dominating him -- and so was he. He was a doctor of physics. Science, physics, research were
his passions since ever. He was a type who always worked on his interests; no
matter how unmaterialistic or non-worldly they were. He belonged to the kind of
most “un-business minded” people who desire and wish worldly things for
themselves but never follow the most prominent, feasible and practical path of
success. He had had certain cravings, like most of normal people do -- A
comfortable living, better if not the best lifestyle, worry-less enjoyable days
and above all, he wanted to give his only daughter Merry, every necessity and
every luxury she wanted and desired. Yet, whenever it came to create the
skyscraper of his ambitions, money did find a place but occupied a floor which
could be traversed by an elevator only - the ground floor always comprised his
passions. His current research, which he was doing privately, was the very same
kind which had made him even more needful due to major part of his earning
being spent on it. Till now, he had not got the opportunity to leave the ground
floor and elevate to see the lustful beauty of the world from the upper floors
of success, fame and money. But it seemed that the time had come. His professorship at the University of Washington had made
his days somewhat better but he had lived a hard life during his adulthood. His
parents, Good Lord bless them in heavens, had luckily left him a small house in
Maryland where he had married Samantha and loved her from his soul. 6 years
back when Samantha left the world, it was like his outrageous desires to follow
his research dreams found an excuse. He was left with only 3 things; sorrow of
Samantha, love of Merry and passion of research. That was the time he decided
to work on what he had always wished; to research on a topic which could lead
him into endless wildernesses of failure or into a shining galaxy of success
which no one had ever achieved. © 2014 Arslan ZaidiAuthor's Note
