My God

My God

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

He would not possess jealousy a trait that even men despise Showing each one he is equal within the lord of this worlds eyes

"
Twain
Mark Twain

If I could create my own god

a soul of both solace and mirth

He who needs no one’s flatteries

nor demands them from all the earth

He would not possess jealousy

a trait that even men despise

Showing each one he is equal

within the lord of this worlds eyes

Having made of each a sinner

he would love all of us the same

Blaming himself for our failings

not tempering us in a flame

Our lives would be a tapestry

a quilt of love, that beauty built

Where he'd take pride in what we are

and not punish us, for his guilt

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
We have to keep our God placated with prayers, and even then we are never sure of him -- how much higher and finer is the Indian's God......Our illogical God is all-powerful in name, but impotent in fact; the Great Spirit is not all-powerful, but does the very best he can for his injun and does it free of charge.
Mark Twain

It seems that it truly is our own intolerance of others that will do us all in. We need to occasionally look at ourselves and the things we believe. How else can we ever effect change. It almost makes me wonder why Jesus decided to come here as a 6 ft white man with blue eyes. This in a area where the population is under six ft tall and has light brown skin and brown eyes. He certainly would have stood out. We all know what populations do to those who are different. It is enough to ponder that a man doesn't know if he should laugh or cry! Could it be as simple an observation as this? Could it be true that man created God in his own image? That would surely be one way of explaining him acting like us.

A very powerful, very courageous write. Although we all seem to think differently about religion- I wanted to comment on the beauty and elegance that this poetic piece of writing exuberates. 'Our lives would be a tapestry, a quilt of love that beauty built'- stunning imagery- and this piece has a wonderful flow about it. On a more personal note of its contents: ‘Do I believe In God?- Yes.’ But I also believe that God would want us to ask questions and to never stop searching for what ‘we’ believe in as individuals and as a whole. To find out what helps us get through life and experience it in all its glory. To learn to from every step we take and to pass our experience, our lessons and our love on to others. Not to doubt that there is a higher power than ourselves, but to find what it is that we believe in our own heart of hearts. I do not think that it is for us to prove in our own time, but to just believe… And to have the vast majority of the world believe… That is some miracle. No matter what name you give to it.

Thank you for sharing your incredible talent.

Tate,

You have set to pen of page a most profoundly thought provoking pies of sheer logic and reason's wisdom that shines within any Free Thinker's open mind ... Magnificent ...!

To share one of my favorite Mark Twain Quotes: "If there was an all-powerful God, he would have made all good, and no bad."

I have read this and come back to it many times now to get my fingers on the pulse of this write. Inside the lines beat such a sense of synchronicity in your expressions to many of my feelings its as if you were reading my mind as you wrote this. as I am sipping my coffee from my mark Twain mug and smiling of such tender sentiments written in such a fine form and rhythm

Totally agree Tate. I could end the review there, but I won't. There aren't many religious pieces I read that I can agree with, but this God should be the one that all faiths agree on, and when they can do that, then I'll start listening.
Faith and belief should be only love and peace, not hatred and war, but as long as we keep seeing differences, then we shall keep breaking deadly sins and commandments in their name.
Sometimes I feel like there was some pages missing or stuck together in those ancient tomes.
I hope they turn up soon so we can finally agree and start being united. Just think what we could achieve. 😀
Love this. So simply and clearly stated that it packs a mighty punch.

"Our lives would be a tapestry a quilt of love, that beauty built" What a beautiful thought this is, Tate. Your spiritual views are logical....I like that. I think all men and women create a God they can identify with...a God who looks very much like themselves. Thought provoking words written in flawless rhythm and rhyme. Wonderful. Lydi**

Well thank you Lydia how kind of you to say. I agree we like acid that is just like us
truly ...it is human misconceptions of our Creator God ... not God's of us ... with all due respect my friend .. this is a sad sad poem to me ... we do fail ... all the time .. and we let fear replace real faith and tolerance .. but those are not the things that emanate from the god exampled and taught by Jesus Christ ...your poem is well done ... the sharp satire and subject are extremely important in my opinion ... open discussions a fruit of your labor Tate.

Your indictment of the "reality" of the Christian concepts of a loving all powerful God poses the question . Why is there so much persecution of its followers?; Testing to destruction, perhaps.!

Thank you Heather nice to meet you welcome to my friends.
I am not sure if the words are yours or Mark Twain's but, beautiful though they are, they are in error.

Hellfire is not a Biblical teaching, it is a church one. And surely, you can appreciate that people are imperfect, despite God's appeals to us to listen to his guidance. The Bible says "He permitted the nations to go their own way." How can we blame our creator for the selfish mistakes we make? The scriptures put it very clearly when they say "It is the foolishness of earthling man that distorts his way, and so he becomes enraged at God."

I just wanted to set the record straight. We are all selfish and imperfect.

I wish you peace.
