My Truth

My Truth

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

If only I could travel back to correct the sins of my youth I could tell him to be like me knowing I was telling the truth

"

Tate and I

This the question of existence

to be a good soul all my days

I find the problem in my years

setting example by my ways

------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I have tried to reconcile

with the conscience that rules my soul

I always find I come up short

never quite reaching that fine goal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I was young I ruled the waves

holding sway in every court

I did as my heart commanded

as if life were a game of sport

------------------------------------------------------------------------

But now that I am not alone

I find myself caring much more

How my character is perceived

and what I hide behind each door

------------------------------------------------------------------------

So now I have committed to

repairing the mistakes and flaws

Fixing all the things that went wrong

when I did not follow the laws

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I pray that I be successful

in changing my bad ways to good

To give my child a fighting chance

just as every father should

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If only I could travel back

to correct the sins of my youth

I could tell him to be like me

knowing I was telling the truth

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
It hurts my soul to even think of some of the foolish misguided passions and mistakes my life once fed. Don't we all wonder what if? I suppose we all would like to be forgiven for the transgressions of our youth. If we could who among us would not go back and repair the damage we have wreaked? Every time I have been upset with my son. I think back to the wasteland that my youth devastated. I find it easy to forgive his little transgressions.
I'm proud to say my son is a better man than me. And my wife a better woman than I deserve. But I shall stay with her so long as she will have me and count my never ending blessings.

hello friend. silly impractical humans that we are, burdened with a conscience that sees 20/20 in reverse and is about as blind as a bat when looking ahead, we are yet so amazingly compassionate and sentient that we endeavor to take the weight of the world on, as each of us were Herculean in our puny oh-so-ungodly stature! Yet the beauty of it is that our hearts are as big as the sky and surely as God-filled as our painfully lacking souls, which is what makes humans so dear in my estimation. We were certainly created in the image of a supreme being (not to offend anyones religious sensibilities here!)

What I love about your writing Tate Morgan is the humility that shines through as a palpable force, the goodness that runs like a river through every line of ink that rolls off your pen, and that you try harder than about anyone I know to own up! I like the way this piece has no ostentatious underpinning, but is just humbly honest. But I guess I just accused you of being Tate Morgan!

Perhaps there was a design in those "mistakes" you made, for are they not now propelling you in the direction of reflection and rise to a greater height? I always walk away from one of your pieces with a little more hope that when I started, because you rub off on a fella like that, it comes right out of the page and into my heart, for which I am always thankful.

You show your integrity with your honesty. Even in the religions of this earth the examples of men show that they are flawed. I'm more familar with the Christian Bible so I will use that as an example. Adam's passion to not loose Eve sent this world into chaos. Noah saved humanity with his boat but was drunk and naked with his own daughters. Sick. Abraham lied to kings and doubted angels. David had men killed for the passion of their wives flesh. Solomon, a poet, dreamer, builder, traveler, had hundreds of wives and indulged his every desire. and on and on and on. In the Christian dogma, salvation is only found in looking to a perfect truth. The Truth being Christ. You cannot nor can any man or woman be the perfect example for our children. If you were somhow to be perfect, you would never expect that from your children. Be a kind father to your own soul and surrender to whatever Higher Power your mind is capable of comprehending. That is the truth you can live and the example your son can follow.
I hope this is not offensive at all. Just got me thinking and I like your work! I don't really know you. Thus this is written to the universal searcher out there when I say "you". Myself included.

As you say so well, we all make foolish mistakes and regret them later. We should all be role models. Amd remember our own mistakes when others make them. But I have to admit this. I once broke the 14th commandent. Would I do it again? In half a heartbeat I would.

Your son is lucky to have a great father such as you. Some children wish for a life even half as good. Another work of art. Well done!

He is the one II trust to watch over my soul.
Love it. Wonderful poem.

If you haven't done those - you are not who you are now. I think what's important is who you become after all. You have a better son then no doubt your a better father.

Ah, the regrets of our youth; you regret the things you did and I regret the things I didn't do. Great poem, Tate, very easy for us poetically challenged people to read and understand.

The journey of life (or lives) in eternal refinement of our wisdom and soul (as we all), and a father's love. That my friend, is a mighty good concoction.

This is a really sweet poem. I'm glad that you're proud of your son and that he wants to build his manhood on his own. Even though you were like you were when you were young, it's always good to correct your sons mistakes. Therefore he is a better man and make HIS mistakes on his own and learn from them when it's time. Keep up the good work raising your son. I'm sure you're a great dad and husband.

A journey of self realisation brings in beautiful changes which fosters to adopt the path of learning from life again and again....It's really true that lessons learned and accepted cleanses the soul off ....
