Tatertots Blues

Tatertots Blues

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

Now most would say that I was wrong advising him this way Politically incorrect to ask he stand and pay

"

Southpaw Tate age 9

My son came home from school one day

worried bout what I'd say

A bully had been taunting him

he'd tortured him all day

_____________________________________________

Now I could see the truth in this

boys tend to act not think

Unlike their female counterparts

they are the missing link

___________________________________________

For boys it’s all about the show

coming into their own

There is no escape for the child

who finds he stands alone

_________________________________________

Four years of Karate classes

all for one afternoon

When he'd have to stand like a man

called out from the saloon

__________________________________________

Next day he ran home all-alight

black-eye on one side too

His smile said he had stood his ground

friendships would start anew

____________________________________________

Next day they both trod side by side

beaten, battered and bruised

Tate along with his new best friend

each sporting black eyed blues

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
My son got into little scraps and he said it was because they teased him calling him Tatertot LOL He came to like that name as it wore on him. I could spend all night trying to explain the behavior of boys.Truth is there is no reason or excuse for us lol.

HAHA! They became best friends! Great song and it's good that your son learned self defense!!

This is so true in many ways Tate. I have told my son to walk away from words but if someone actually hits him first then he has the right to defend himself. Isn't funny how with boys sometimes a fight can lead to friendship? I love this poem.

Excellent read! I wouldn't say you were wrong. I work with children, 3 year olds and I have some from time to time that will pick a certain child to be mean to. I put the child in time out that is bullying, but time out is a party time these days. Now I usually wouldn't tell the other child to hit back or what ever, but when all else has failed. iI do tell the picked on child to give it back to the bully one, to lay them out! It usually works. Now I don't let them get hurt mind you, I just let him or her learn to take up for self when nothing else works!

excuse the pun but this one really is a shiner. masterfully conceived narrative of the coming of age and rite of passage
point in every young man's life. very nicely done indeed! i remember the first time i had to make a stand. fortunately for me, at that time, i was a third degree green belt and had no difficulty dispensing with the school bully, who ran when he saw what i could do. excellent poem and wonderful lesson!

A very nice lesson! I like how you write about times in your life because it gets us readers all the more closer to you, and your sons! Nice write! :]

Just a rite of passage in my day, Tate, and I remember my first fight well. Thanks for bringing home the memory with a flesh-toned thud.
