Tatertots Blues

Tatertots Blues

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

Now most would say that I was wrong advising him this way Politically incorrect to ask he stand and pay

"

Southpaw Tate age 9

My son came home from school one day

worried bout what I'd say

A bully had been taunting him

he'd tortured him all day

_____________________________________________

Now I could see the truth in this

boys tend to act not think

Unlike their female counterparts

they are the missing link

___________________________________________

For boys it’s all about the show

coming into their own

There is no escape for the child

who finds he stands alone

_________________________________________

Four years of Karate classes

all for one afternoon

When he'd have to stand like a man

called out from the saloon

__________________________________________

Next day he ran home all-alight

black-eye on one side too

His smile said he had stood his ground

friendships would start anew

____________________________________________

Next day they both trod side by side

beaten, battered and bruised

Tate along with his new best friend

each sporting black eyed blues

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
My son got into little scraps and he said it was because they teased him calling him Tatertot LOL He came to like that name as it wore on him. I could spend all night trying to explain the behavior of boys.Truth is there is no reason or excuse for us lol.

I think once again Tate you have shown what a wonderful father you are to your son. You have given him strength when he needed it and allowed him to find a way to defend himself in this world. There is nothing worse than being frightened by a bully. Your son faced his fear thanks to you and has learnt an important lesson in life, that fighting doesn’t solve anything…believing in yourself does.

Intersting Tate! Well expressed.

Whimsical... has a small 'smidge' of childish innocence that really just makes the whole thing pop. Great job again! :)

First thing I've read this morning and I am grinning. Have raised a number of boys and girls and yes, boys will be boys. In some respect girls can be more vicious- boys get it out with a punch - girls do it socially and verbally.

Loved the flow ~ great ink!

boys never change it is funny how a freindship can start from a well delivered punch :)

I've missed your bittersweet poems, Tate; and now this is a surprise from you! The whimsical note here and there and the casual happenings resonate your writing style very well. There are some minor grammar and prosodic tweaks, but I would ignore them. And yeah, Boys will be Boys :-D Your experience as a Father/Poet stands above everything else.

PS. I'm kind of word-sick nowadays. I'm just editing my old poems, trying to dig up some inspiration. So, if you wanna review mine, it well might be the old ones.

Keep writing.

It never seems to stop either, you still have to stand up for yourself as an adult whether its a boss or some other a*****e. The fighting seems to go away but not the pride. Great write Tate.

This is a wonderful poem, Tate. I love that the martial arts teach you to be ready, but to only fight if necessary. I also love that you gave your son the go-ahead, even though it was politically incorrect NOW, wouldn't have been decades ago. I won't even attempt to understand boys, but bullies, I do understand. They are usually bigger and twice as scared as the ones they bully. Your poem is classy and well written! Great job!
