A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

Where your heart becomes a cannon spit iron on the whale Follow him through perdition's flame then live to tell the tale

"

There is no ship quite like a book

it wanders as it may

Then takes us out amongst the waves

where gods and children play

To places far and wide we trek

chase hell's whale 'long the pole

Crest waves with Ahab na'er the cape

where gods may claim your soul

There your heart becomes a cannon

spit iron on the whale

Follow him through perdition's flame

and live to tell the tale

As the oarsmen all stagger back

cross themselves o’re the job

No hope to see another day

forlorn begin to sob

Imaginations running wild

wicked cruelty sublime
Chase your whale till you catch his tail

or till the end of time

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
Books are the windows to the world. But more than that they traverse time itself. As they take you to Melviles time of Moby Dick. They inspire. More than that they create the world of imagination. For Ahab the White Whale was nothing to be so idealised, rather it was "...all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby-Dick. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it."
Thank You Allen Eddings for that rendition of the classic tale

My ancestors were whalers and sailors from Maine:) I found many graves with the family name in an old cemetery in downtown portland so Melville's book struck a deep chord in me as do many of the old sailor stories every year (almost) I go whale spotting and almost nothing can compare to the majestic beauty of experiencing these creatures up close! Except perhaps a well crafted book or poem that brings those memories all pouring back!

Tate, you always bring your words to life and here you write about the very topic which has driven your own life's journey, books! The one tying bond between us all!

Very nice poem, Tate. And the message is true, books take our imagination on a limitless journey to see and feel things as another person (character), sometimes in other world's where we of our own canniness could never dare to dream. I read voraciously, but it never occurred to me to write a poem about reading, as you have done so artfully here. Wise and cleverly written, this was another great one.

I think this is my favorite poem so far. Books have always been special to me. Every one takes u on a new journey. Each character is waiting to be heard, hated, loved, pitied, admired and remembered. A world without books or the written word in any form would be a desolate empty place. :-)
