The Ides of Winter

The Ides of Winter

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

Our days lit by constant sunshine strength in numbers was our design In hand me downs we ran through town with baseball bat and ball of twine

"

Our days lit by constant sunshine

strength in numbers was our design

In hand me downs we ran through town

with baseball bat and ball of twine

By golden skies and rustled tree

for reasons yet unknown to me

My eyes were keen to beauty seen

this soul my own as I was free

When Ides of Winter come to be

oh times when lives were all carefree

Follow my track all the way back

to friends who meant so much to me

"Then we aged the world took over"

^ Amazing how you shift the pulse and meaning of the poem with just one line!

"When Ides of Winter come to be

Follow my track all the way back
to friends who meant so much to me"

It is interesting that your character seeks his way back from the "middle" or ides of winter, to a taste of the youth that he has lost. Is there a point of no return when we cannot remember the memories of our youth? Do we leave enough of a track in our wake to be able to follow our way back through the "snows" of Winter? When we grow older do we really jump from summer all the way to winter and skip the autumn? Symbolically the seasons are tied to stages in our life: Spring=youth, Summer=Young Adulthood/beginnings of parenthood/marriage, Autumn =Family/coming of age of next generation, Winter=Retirement/golden years/ending of life. Just a few musings on the topic in your poem.

Today, for the first time since I can remember...something like at least 49 years, I was not concerned about school closings due to weather. More intent on the memory of a summer so many years ago which faded into a fall that was most memorable. You capture here the carefree days for us all to remember, and took me back to the sandlot where we played ball, flew kites and played cowboys and indians, and endless games of tag as well. well done!

I genuinely liked this one. The flow was nice and I didn't even noticed the rhymes until I stopped to remember your style of writing. Good job, Tate!
