Soul Mates

Soul Mates

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

So many lifetimes come and go between ill spent youth and the grave Hopes and dreams of generations Are the memories we all save

"

How many times have I met you

in the strangers that passed me by

Were you the one that touched my coat

the friend that once kissed me goodbye

How often have we stood in line

just to watch loved ones go to war

Then brushed away the tears of hope

as they ran off to join the Corps

Were you the one whose heart had ached

when my ship drifted out to sea

The foundered soul whose anchor broke

the one whose dreams had yearned for me

Are we destined to always be

just passing strangers in the night

Whose ebbing flowing tides of love

never met when the time was right

So many lifetimes come and go

between ill spent youth and the grave

Hopes and dreams of generations

hold the memories we all crave

Perhaps I'm just the little child

with a heart that once broke in two

Who walks the well-worn streets of old

searching for memories of you

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
Don't we all wonder if another is the one for whom we were meant?
How many lifetimes must we pass by before our soul finds it's hearts desire?
This was for the green eyes cased in Honey Hue, that I once knew.
May she find this dream to be her own .

This piece simply makes me swoon in the ideals of such times. This is by far, one of my favorites. Tate, you have donr it again, made me simply have to stop and stare at the beautiful scene you have laid out here. "Are we destined to always be,
just passing strangers in the night" Even for a moment to pass by one so precious, it would be worth a lifetime. I can nearly hear the brass band in the distance.

I like the idea of blending the media: poetry, picture, music. The genre and eras throw me a bit with the music and the WWII photo.

Stanza 2, line 4: 'Corp' should be "Corps," in reference to USMC. Right?

Stanza 4, line 3: You used 'foundered.' I think you meant 'floundered.' Dictionary.com has become easier to use than my 4" thick Websters.

Stanza 6: You use 'little child' as an associative anchor without having made reference to anything youth oriented. It seems off to me compared to the other mature themes of passing love and affection given by lovers. The whole piece really does speak to unrequited love and the forelorn memories of days gone by. These are complex emotions that disassociate with 'child.'

I liked where you were going with the overall piece. It is an interesting perspective. And that is what we do as writers; add in verse our creative perspectives.

Wow.. the first thing that hit me was the song.. talk about bring a person back in time! (Such a sweet song). I loved the message .. though I fight destiny and old thoughts of fated love.. this really draws a part of my heart! This one could really touch a lonely person's soul and make them wonder.. if there was that one that was meant to with us. Very enticing in the romantic sense.. feeling of being lost and confused looking back upon old loves and acquaintances. A high sense of openness.. that is magnetic.. great work with this one! Only a couple of times I thought I found that .. but to find it was just a fantasy-trap.. the lucky find a soul-mate. Wonderful writing!

I never believed in the concept of the "soul mate" until I met mine. However, I would say that our lives can be complete without finding "The One Destined For Us". How could it be otherwise? There are billions of people on the planet... what if your "soul mate" is in Kenya? I've known folks whose soul mates were actually parents, siblings, cousins, etc. I think we can have more than one- they are simply souls we knew on the other side, whatever it might be.

That being said, I think that what happens is very rarely we meet a person whose being resonates so strongly with us, we feel instantly at home with him or her. This feeling of kindred spirits is commonly mistaken as finding "The One". This, I believe in wholeheartedly. and, you have wonderfully captured what this concept evokes in me, with writing this piece. Nice job!
