There was a time when my heart was cold as ice. Long before I remarried and had recovered my life. But I found bitterness too hard a hard pill to swallow. Thankfully time marched on and the better angel of my nature took control of my heart leading me to happiness again. When I first wrote this poem I was so deeply distressed. That day I decided to make of my life something new. Tonight while thinking on those days I went through my thousands of pictures and gave my exwife those that I thought she should have. A peace offering I suppose. Though after a few drinks I have to admit the song from Iris Dement had me laughin so hard. That because it is not human nature to let go pain and grant forgiveness. However I shall try not to dwell on past misery. I am trying very hard to let go the hard thoughts and swim in the river of forgiveness and grace. To those few people whom I loved and who dared to love me.
Thank you!
By the way just imagine the genders are reversed in the song above.

Definitely a darker poem for you Tate.. can feel all of the pain and angst in this one.. the song seals it.. so funny.. need a little laughter to go with heartache and pain
a poem with a lesson or a gentle admonishment. We only do ourselves detriment if we do not forgive. I struggle with this concept SO much. Its sad. swimming in the river of forgiveness and grace. Yes. peace.
My emotions are all mixed up, having been on both sides of this coin at one time or another. I know in my head that forgiveness is a correct response, but my heart refuses to accept it. I am left after hearing the song along with your clearly laid out feeling both laughing and crying; I think it I found that sentiment in a Joni Mitchell song, "Laughing and crying...you know it's the same release..." I think I will laugh at myself and my "X" husband.
Bravo Tate!
Its tough, getting everything you're feeling down in its essence. Some people would have been tempted to write flowery tragedy like Byron, but you evoke the picture with indelible word imagery that sticks an arrow square in the bullseye.
Ah man... this one hits home for me these days, as I continue my search and continue with my meditations, hoping for those brief moments of clarity and peace. Day by day, we need to let go the anger, find forgiveness... and not contemplate why someone did this or that, but instead, take time to find why, in fact, we are affected so... in hopes that we can become better by those circumstances. There, I've ranted enough...lol... Nice write my friend!
