Believe In Me

Believe In Me

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

I for one did stay behind , when everyone else grew up.

"

Granddaughter Payton

If snow turned to ice ‘cream

milky ways were candy bars

Then the sky turned lucid

and began to rain stars

 _________________________

Mud pies taste like cookies

fall leaves would turn to gold

I'd fly to Santa's Castle

without ever getting cold

 _________________________

The wild west witch would love me

as she brewed her dinner of souls

I'd have all my fine clothing

bright and shiny none with holes

 _________________________

Where did all the innocence go

how did we get so jaded

What did we do with all those dreams

could our lives be so faded

__________________________

I for one did stay behind

when everyone else grew up

I don't want to be a dog

I'd rather be a pup

We may not be able to go back there .But in my mind is a story still unfinished of a curious boy and the adventures of the big world.

Oh yes! I wish I'd read this before because by now I'd have read it a dozen or more times - if you know what I mean!

Love the thought of never growing up, living in a world of sweet make-believe where life is jumping in puddles and thunder is only mischievous angels slamming Heaven's gates!

There's a sweet juxtaposition of thought in this : ' The wild west witch would love me. As she brewed her dinner of souls. I'd have all my fine clothing. Bright and shiny none with holes.'

Thank you for sharing this .. it's all heart!

You made me miss my childhood. My childhood was literally the best part of my life. I would kill to relive that happiness agian... I'm kinda sad right now haha
I love the raw emotion, and I love this poem! You made me very sad, but that is what you want poetry to do. Give you emotion.... Oh my God, I miss my childhood so much.

You truly captured the very essence of childhood; the world really was fantastic when your imagination was the limit. Your poem actually reminded me of a few things.
I’m curious, have you ever heard of William Wordsworth’s Intimations of Immortality? Upon reading your lines, ‘Have all the colors run together/did we lose our sense of awe’, I was instantly reminded of it. The concept of the child leading the adult, and the pure beauty of nature through the eyes of youth.
I really enjoyed you final stanza, especially how you began it by stating how you once stayed behind, almost in a Peter Pan kind of way. But there’s a wistfulness there as well, because unlike Peter Pan, there’s no real escape from adulthood.
But the memories always linger, and you expressed them perfectly.
Also, I loved ‘dinner of souls’. Great work. :)

Actually, I don't think any of us grow up, our bodies just grow old so we can't do what we use to do plus we have to exist in a 'grown up world' so we behave as such. Wonderful poem. It makes me feel sad in a way because we can never go back to those more innocent times.

I loved it! I don't think I will ever fully grow up because the joy and the magic of being youthful is so magnificent! I think everyone has a youthful spirit in them.
