It has always bothered me the idea of being paid in the end for our good deeds that is. If a man needs rewarded in the end for deeds he should do by conscience there is something wrong with him. Kindness is it's own reward. Kindness is the language the deaf can hear and the blind can see.

As always, Tate, you ponder the imponderable. I don't suppose we'll ever know the answer to your questioning the rights or wrongs of performing good deeds. Suffice it to say that good deeds usually bring about positive results, and these should be reflected in our Karma. Better that than the destructive urges now being played out in the middle east, anyway. And if there is nothing after death, we lose nothing by being magnanimous.

This is the first post I've stumbled onto here Tate and I must say that I felt rather good reciting it. That's right, I literally recited it out loud as I read it and when a poem makes you do that you know it's a good one :D
This is great, its such a selfless piece, really speaks to people and tells quite a story.
It is much better to do something nice because you want to. You like to see the person you have done something nice for smile. Making others happy, making there day is more than enough.
Very wise words my friend.
I have always liked your work.
The way you write is also very poetic, the words you use are poetic.
Brilliant write.

Tate, this is one of your best. Every line the thought comes through and hits the reader with those sentimental feelings. A super write and one for my favorites list..Kathie

Wow -- stunning lines: "Through heat and cold we push onward; like Lemmings to the sea" and "By joys hereof, through souls we love; is man then measured weighed" I love the statement in this one. Whatever you believe, you can't plan all your hopes around what may come after the end. We are all the measure of what we do in this life… whose hearts we hold sacred and do not betray.
There you go again Tatertot always tugging on my heart strings and teaching me a lesson in the process. I don't think I'll ever tire of you. Eloquent prose, beautiful message, kind soul.
Love Ya

You continue to set the standard with thought-provoking topics infused with a steady rhythm. Each time I reach for the bar, you set the bar higher, motivating me to improve my own efforts.
I am not a fan of any religion so this poem rings true for me more so than others as I don't use religion as a tool or a guideline for a reason why I should be kind to others and/or enjoy this life without the promise of any type of "afterlife".
