The Midwest

The Midwest

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

Life in the Midwest reminds me of Johnny Cash and "Sunday Morning Coming Down"

"

I was born of the ceaseless plains

with the endless sky above

It was there I learned to wander

it was there I learned to love

Despite where life had taken me

from green grass to black sea foam

I’d cried to each wind filled valley

"will I ever find a home"

Days of life would pass on to years

distant plains rang out a plea

Over the rivers and valleys

where my home had drank of me

The Midwest had been calling me

as it echoed out in song

"I am the land of your fathers

and here is where you belong"

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
For many of the years of my life I wondered why I never felt at home when I traveled far and wide? Then as I aged it came to me. There is a reason birds fly back to where they were born and fish swim thousands of miles to spawn in the rivers they were born from. Who we are is as simple as where we came from. So I came home to start a family and pass that to my own children.

Beautiful poetry. Could not have put it in a better way. Yes, the dust we are raised from is the dust that we should be burried into.................... Splendid poem.

Thank you I agree we are as simple as from where we come bury me in the land of my fathers
A quint and down-to-earth message, its those memories that echo throughout our hearts no matter the distance we travel, the old adage says 'home is where the heart is" true, but perhaps the heart is ever truly seeking home.

Really emotional piece. Its sad that for betterment, liberation or security people have to leave their homes and go to places alien to them. But farther you go more you long to return to your native land, just as the force gets stronger when you move far from the magnet. My grandfathers too came from Punjab to this city and I know the feeling, despite having faced wartime trauma. I didn't live there still, that place is more special to me than my city. Very nice poem. Thumbs up!

Good. Captures without fanfare one of the most powerful and universal of human motives: to find one's way home.
