I knew this this day would come. It is so near I can taste it. I will walk out to see him off with a smile upon my face. Give him the speech I like to call "what it means to be a man". Tell him to trust his instincts. Never take something for nothing. Never take unfair advantage of another nor let them take unfair advantage of him. Help those who need it and respect all the women in his life. "Son the value of a man lies not in what he owns, but in what he gives to others". Then I'll wave as he sets off, as my heart simply breaks.

Well that really upset me. I've got tears in my eyes right now. My son was 19 last week and had his heart broken for the first time. I sat and held him tight for a very long time.
A fathers bond with his son is for life. Do not fear that you are loosing him. You will be needed more than you know in the years to come.
if you build a house on firm foundations it will last a life time.

Tate, my son has just reached this stage this year....and I know exactly how you feel. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do...letting him go. My son turns 3 this summer. I know of all the emotions and fear that you speak of. Even his short 3 years have gone so very fast, and just want time to slow down. I wish i could put off the day when he will feel his first heart break, his first failure, his first humiliation, but I cannot. But i can be here when they do happen, and i suppose that's what the best dad do. Great poem Tate, great memories.

so beautiful Tate ... chills up and down all the spine of my own life as you have captured so much love and honor and discipline here in your poetry ..to pass it on .. to your young son .. i have two sons of my own (grown and with children) but that arduous road to the door is a long one .. as parents we just need to keep faith and the door always open .. so glad to know you here on WC .. i think we could easily lift a pint together :)
