Day in the Sun

Day in the Sun

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

A life spent cowering from pain will leave you so aching inside The gift you'd miss, from life's sweet kiss knowing you never even tried

"

Tatertot

With the start of the first inning

as the wind whistled through the tree's

Our short stop had his shoulder broke

and the fates blew in on the breeze

This team was a thorn in the side

of the Harding President's Club

It was on this night my son Tate

was scheduled to play as a sub

The kid pitching for North Union

hurled a cooking heater down field

You could hear that freight train coming

as it's hide was 'bout to be peeled

Their coach then rallied his talent

pressing their shoulders to the wheel

like natives dancing 'round a fire

driving devils who'd struck a deal

 A death defying mid-air, catch

the bounding, ball tossed on the run

The Devil was in town this night

riding in on the setting sun

They dove and slid then nearly flew

as if the angels rode their backs

While running bases half possessed

plowing the field with cleated tracks

,

The dice kept coming up seven

and oh prophetically so

When the sun had finally set

the score was seven to zero

Come ye fathers follow your child

through the tough times every one

For the oft chance will someday come

when they will have finally won

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
Americans love the underdogs. It is such an American thing to do. Because the thrill of a win from a team thought washed up gives us all hope that the dreams that were washed away in our own youth could be rekindled and burn again.Such is the nexus of the American soul!

This is a great poem that highlights a team and the events of a particular game. I've watched my nephews and grand nephew play and can feel the winning excitement in this poem. I really like the song! As always, great work, Tate. Thanks for sharing! Temp

Yeah they were proud of themselves
I think the thing I miss most about baseball as a kid was the neighborhood pick up games they were so much fun on a hot saturday morning. The strange mix of kids that would coalesce about a baseball diamond that would have nothing to do with each other in any other setting all of the sudden would unify:) nicely expressed Tate and nice job on the video

Thank you I much Appreciate it
Baseball will never be the same after reading this riveting account of this all action game Tate. I really enjoyed the metaphors you used. We too like the underdog over here, taking the lead and shining. Your final stanza, so wise. We should stick close to our kids through good and bad, through thick and thin. Hope you are doing OK in these troubled times.

Hi Craig may you be whisked back to your childhood and passing glances from friends
I'm sure too, as you must know from playing the game yourself, that exhilarating hope we felt as played the game comes rushing back when we watch the underdogs hard-driving their way to victory. Your words took me right back to my own days on that field and showed me again why I love a good baseball movie!

my thoughts too
This poem, as an athlete, i understand what it is like to win as an underdog and it is one of the best feelings, reading this poem made me feel like i was in that position again and it was very well written, also good use of language.
