Turning Point

Turning Point

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

This moment came for me that is on the morning my son was born When my thoughts turned from mine to his whereby a better man was sworn

"

Tate with Mitchel his cousin 5yrs old

Upon delivery of Tate

I decided to cast some rules

Become the master of his fate

by using knowledge as if tools

______________________________

The first rule cast for us back then

to never publicly disgrace

I think important to all men

of every color and race

 ______________________________

The second was to listen hard

to whatever he has to say

Only then would I think to tell

how the situation might weigh

 ______________________________

The third and final thought I had

to make him learn to love himself

Not to assume that he is bad

for what I'm guilty of myself

_____________________________

There comes a time, when we face truth

only then do we change our ways

Cast out the follies of our youth

place in memory childhood days

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
It is a humbling thing to create a child. To see yourself through their eyes. Most men believe death the great equalizer. It isn't true at least for those who have passed away. The truth is the great equalizer is the birth of your own child. Only then do we fear the truth and realize our actions have consequences. We realize then everything we ever do from that point on will be studied and mimicked in fine detail. Reflecting good or ill upon our children's future. With them go the hopes and dreams of all humanity.

A true honest piece, you will be at a time when all will go so naturally.... I loved it, because we propagate resulting in the evolution of every father, there is and shall be a new father, sometimes the opposite and there are difficulties, other times, there is true luck, and we should take all out of that. But be aware of the good and beautiful things in life, always, this write is not to late, it's a eye-opener... The message is so clear, from which part of the world we were born, be good to them. They are our future.

It's beautiful. Thank you Tate.

Your son was born when you were more mature than a lot of fathers and I think that makes a big difference. I had my children when I was in my twenties and I notice how very different I am with my grandchildren than I was with my own children - maturity wins out every time. Great poem, Tate, the love you feel for your son is very evident!

A new generation brings many things as perception and experience in the world. A father who presumes himself capable of leading a new born in a new time must be saying that he himself lives the norm of the new times...that he is perhaps born again. You keep too many secrets Tate. Can we expect to see more of that in your poetry?

So many words of wisdom in one little poem! One of the gifts from true poetry. My favorite stanza is the fifth. It rings with such honesty, as parents look to find themselves in their children. What a better world this would be if all parents gave some thought to what kind of parent they want to be, to help a new soul grow. Your poetry does so many things to my heart-warms it, makes it nod in agreement and it thanks you for putting into words, the feelings I cannot express.

Well dang, that brought a tear to my eye. Well done, that hasn't happened often. More now than before. It seems the older I get the closer the water comes to the end of the spicket. This may be my favorite of yours, so far. I agree with David. Slather them with love.

Well said, Tate, I especially like that penultimate verse:

'The third and final thought I had
to make him learn to love himself
Not to assume that he is bad
for what I'm guilty of myself'

Being a father is a thankless task at the best of times; being a good father is well nigh impossible unless a great deal of thought is given to the child's welfare. To show love on a daily basis is the best way to give a child a sense of self esteem, leading to the growth of a well rounded individual.
But we must all bear in mind the words of Oscar Wilde on the subject -

'Children begin by loving their parents; after a time they judge them; rarely, if ever, do they forgive them.'

David.
