The Dance of TreesA Poem by J Mourning
The music starts, slowly;
a soft caress, a gentle chime,
and soon the trees are
caught up, moving in time.
They sway like young lovers
at their first dance - barely
touching and so gently,
they rock forth and back.
And then, the chimes squeal, and
the howling begins, and the
trees move more like rock
concert fans. They toss and
they turn and trample and shake.
God help us all if one should break!
And then it’s over, quick as it began.
The trees calm themselves and,
sit and ignore - like old men napping after
a long day. They sit and stare at the world around them.
And they wait with hope that the next time
the wind stirs them to dance with
the music, that they will not break,
but again bend and sway
and go on to dance another day.
