Nicholas Nickleby

Courage is not something one needs to earn, it is something one is born with. Every living thing has courage. The lion from the Wizard of Oz just needed to find it. According to the dictionary, courage is defined as the quality or state of mind or spirit enabling one to face danger or hardship with confidence and resolution. “ One man with courage is a majority,” stated Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Not only is courage present in reality, it also occurs in literature. The character Nicholas Nickleby in the Victorian Novel Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens is successful in achieving his goals because of his courage, passion, and kindness.

Nicholas succeeded in his goals because of the courage he possessed. When Nicholas’s father passed away and hardships came, Nicholas was courageous and took the lead in his family. He went off to teach at an all boys school, Do The Boys, in Yorkshire England. In a scene in the movie, the headmaster started whipping a boy named Smike who had tried to run away. Nicholas shouted “Stop! This must not go on. I will not allow it.” Then, Nicholas started to hit the school master with the master’s own whip. This action portrays Nicholas’s courage.

Another trait Nicholas possesses is passion. Nicholas was passionate about keeping the boys at the school unharmed from the school master’s abusive actions. He was mostly passionate about keeping Smike safe, the crippled boy who was forced to work at the school.  Nicholas did many things to protect Smike, like running away with him to London, and saving him when he had been kidnapped.

Nicholas was a very kind person. He always reached out to people when they needed it the most, and he never put himself before the needy. He was a very kind and caring man. He looked after the crippled boy Smike and brought the boy into his family. Though Nicholas barely knew the boy, he pitied him,  therefore he took care of him.

In conclusion, Nicholas was considered the hero of the novel as well as the movie. He possessed all the desired traits a young man needs. This movie shows that Nicholas’s traits aren’t only present in reality, but in literature too. With Nicholas’s traits, one can live a successful life without ever being criticized.
