Hello, Stranger

Prologue

For him, the one and easy definition of life is: unpredictable. It’s like an endless road, full of different directions, signs and paths. Would you stay on what you think is the right path? Or would you just take your chances by going the other way, when you know that that change can possibly make your life different forever?

As I Crime Scene Investigator, all he did was work, work, and most especially, work. Actually he worked too much that his feelings completely shut down. He never even thought of having a girlfriend or settling in from the moment he started his job, he just thought about the present, more specifically, his job and his career.

He never even thought that something like this would happen, that falling in love with his best friend would happen to him. Well, to be honest, she was the least person who was ever likely to be his best friend or lover, not that they expected them to be... well, he did, but… you know what he means! But surprisingly, there he was, contemplating on what was the right thing to do, because honestly, all he could think about now is that both options were wrong.

Falling in love with his best friend was not at all like the ones you read in novels, (especially if said best friend might just be smarter or tougher than you), where the two just acts like blind people, ignoring the very obvious choice, which was always right in front of them. No, their relationship is not like that at all, he’s completely between the devil and the deep blue sea. Would he choose the one where there might be the worst situations or the one with the worst situations? In other words, there’s nothing really good to choose from.

To tell you the truth, he doesn’t even know if she considers him as her best friend, because he’s been avoiding her for like, two? Three months? A whole year? Honestly, he didn’t know at all, because it seems that every day is a very long day without her brightening it up for him, he got used to her presence so much that it almost hurts physically to see her centimeters away from him, though it seems like she’s still very far away. But the one thing he knew about this complicated relationship is that he didn’t want it to get any deeper, for the sake of both of their goods.

Suddenly, his cell phone rang. He picked it up and looked at the number. He sighed and tossed it back to his sofa. This would be her third call this night, but she didn’t say anything important in the previous two calls, she just said, “Hey, it’s me, obviously… just call me back, ‘kay?”.He never answered her calls, he just let it go through voicemail, he wasn’t in a mood for another row right now, his mind was already aching from all the thinking he did.

He let the call go through the voicemail again, but this time her call has something more to it than the previous ones. There was a beep and her familiar, usually cheery voice spoke through the phone. Her voice lost all its cheeriness from the fight they had a week ago.

“Hey… I know I’ve been calling for three times already and even if no one’s answering, I still know you’re there,” she said. God, she really knows me well, he thought. “Look, I know this would sound weird, and not to mention, awkward, but just hear me out, okay?” There was a pause, as if she was gathering all of her courage to say something. She took a deep breath and continued. “Look, I miss you, I miss us, the relationship that we had… I miss my best friend! I don’t know what happened, one day, we’re best friends and then the next day, we’re ignoring each other. It feels like something changed between us,” she said all this in a slightly unstable voice, as if preventing herself from crying.

Yeah, something definitely changed, he thought to himself again as he buried his face in his hands. He continued on listening to her.

“J, please… look, I just want to talk about it, I just want all of this to be right again. Call me back when you’re ready to,” she said and with a final breath, she hung the phone up.

He was at loss on what to say. How could they possibly talk about this when all the things they need to talk about were better left unsaid?

Damn, he hated this, he hated her for leading him on, he hated himself because he knew that she didn’t led him on at all and that he only blamed her to deny the fact that he’s crazily in love with her and more importantly, he hated life and it’s f*****g challenges.

It’s funny, isn’t it? When one little decision on whether or not he should attend a meeting can change his life?
