The Soldier's DreamA Poem by Greg the BardA Soldier’s Dream Long ago a German solder sat In a Flanders ditch weapon in hand Waiting for daylight To kill his fellowman A cold mist like fog Hung around his head White breaths came from his mouth His head was bowed in fear He wondered what the morrow had in store A matter of luck or just death Two solders he called friends Were that day gone in a flash Does it hurt to die? Or just to survive in wound? How could you know? Unless you were the wounded soldier. The trench was wet and cold He had lost the feeling to his feet And now his mind was playing Tricks on his very soul Someone was singing It was a Christmas Carol It was a German song About a tree His thoughts went to the date Was it in fact Christmas And then out in the land of no men came a reply In English bright and clear Peace on earth my friend Merry Christmas © 2011 Greg the BardReviews
