NixA Story by Shree Balaji EducationA girl, driven to near insanity has a chance to escape her imprisonment one stormy night.Nix C.C. As a storm raged outside, the lights flickered in the cell. There was no furniture, only a young girl sitting in the corner. ‘Nix’ they called her, because of what she was and what she could do. She stared blankly at the wall as the door opened, revealing a doctor and two orderlies. “Nix, it is time for your evaluation. Do you understand me?” the doctor asked the girl, but there was no response. “Nix, I asked you a question! Do you understand?!” When there was again no response, he made a hand motion at the orderlies who swiftly grabbed the girl from her seated position. The men dragged Nix down the hallway, following the doctor into an unknown room. “Strap her down, she’s still too dangerous,” ordered the doctor as he went into the control room. The two men did as they were told; strapping the equipment onto the girl, with a large metal lock holding her head in place. Nix made no struggle, but had a strange glimmer in her eye as she stared ahead at the three men. The dark rings under her eyes gave her an almost inhuman look, frightening one of the orderlies. “Should we really be doing this Dr. Stone? She’s just a kid after all,” said the frightened orderly, hoping to reason with the man. “Child or not, I plan on finding out just how her brain works. If she passes, then we move on to our next test subject. After all, one life is an easy price to pay for the greater good,” Dr. Stone said as he began to turn on the machines. Nix silently waited for whatever torture they had planned for her this time. They were all out to get her, and the one person who was supposed to protect her had locked her in this Hell hole. She remembered a happier time when her mother was still around, full of life and love. Back then, her father seemed to love both her and her mother, though it all had to be fake. He never cared about her, and after her mother died that was proven. The man withdrew from her life, leaving her alone in her childhood. For years, she was not allowed to leave the house, being taught by those her father hired. This left for no socializing, leaving her to make friends with things that didn’t exist. She was alone for seven years…. Nix was brought out of her flashback by a loud crash from outside. The room went dark, with emergency lights flickering to life shortly after. She smirked in the darkness, knowing this was just the moment she needed. “Damn it! Someone go see what was hit! And you, take her back to her cell! I don’t need any more trouble tonight!” Doctor Stone said to the frightened orderly. He then left the room from a back exit, making his way through the hospital. The orderly unhooked Nix from her bindings, making sure to keep her hands restrained. He then began to drag her out of the room towards her cell, but suddenly dropped to his knees clutching his head in pain. Nix’s eyes glowed as she stared at the man. “Pathetic. How could someone with such outer strength be so weak in the mind? I’ll make this quick then” she thought as she delved further into the man’s mind. She tore through his memories, making him remember the evils of his life. “No! Please, make it stop! I was just following orders!” the orderly pleaded with Nix. “Mercy please Nix!” Nix twitched at his last words before she frowned and finished the job. She looked the orderly over, summoning his keys to her restraints. She then used her mind to lift the man’s body into a storage closet and made her way down the halls. She sneaked her way through the shadows, as the power was still out for most of the building. As she walked, she could hear other inmates screaming from their cells. She sent out a thought to all of them “Silence!” and they quieted down and stared at her. Nix passed by the cells, looking at no one. She made a right down the East Hallway. She passed by doctors and nurses, staying low as she did. If anyone saw her, she would either make them think they hadn’t, or would just knock them unconscious. She had just rounded a corner to head up a flight of stairs when an alarm began to blare “Attention all personnel, there is an escaped inmate on the loose. Be on watch for Subject Nix. Be warned, she is dangerous and no attempt should be made to stop her alone. Use any means necessary to restrain her.” The alarm continued to blare a warning sound, causing panic among the personnel. Men began to run down the stairs Nix was heading up, so she hopped over the railing and hid under the stairwell. The two men she assumed were guards ran past her hiding spot down the hallway. She smirked and resumed her escape, heading up the flight of stairs. “One more floor” she thought as she entered the final hallway before she would have her freedom. “That’s far enough Nix. Did you actually think you could escape? I watched you just minutes after you broke that poor man. This gives me another test subject, but enough is enough. You are going to go back to your cell and stay there! You are never going to leave this place! No one is going to come and get you, because no one cares about you!” Doctor Stone said to the girl. Nix looked at the ground, seeming to have shut down as she tended to do. As Doctor Stone approached her with a new set of restraints, she looked up at him, eyes no longer giving off a glow, but were pure black and seemed to suck the life out of the room. She glared at the doctor, forcing her way into his mind. She saw memories of every experiment he had done to her, all the pain he caused. This only fueled her rage as she began to rip his mind to pieces. Her anger was getting the better of her, as objects in the hall were thrown into the walls, her power getting out of control. She twisted Doctor Stone’s memories to make him in her place in those experiments, so he would feel the past two years of constant pain. As he began to lose consciousness, Doctor Stone uttered a few final words, “This was for you Jewel”. He then passed out from the pain he felt, body shaking on the floor. Nix’s eyes returned to their normal blue as she looked down at the man with contempt. No matter how much she hated him, she couldn’t bring herself to kill him. She reached down and took a journal from Doctor Stone’s pocket, before putting the restraints on him and walking towards the exit. Opening the journal, she saw pictures of her family before her mother’s accident, and for the first time in years, she cried. Tears streamed from her eyes as she looked at the happiness her family had once felt. Once her mother passed, her father acted as though she was a burden, until she had reached age fourteen. He began to speak to her again, and things finally seemed okay after all those years alone. She had no idea that when her mother died, her father did as well. The man who began to hurt her was no father, but a monster. After two years of experiments and pain, she had a way to fight back, but she was truly broken. From then on they called her Nix, as though nothing was there. She reached the exit door and looked back at Doctor Stone. Her tears stopped, and she uttered her final words, “Goodbye…..Father”. She ran out the door into the dark of the night, heading South. © 2016 Shree Balaji Education |
