Case Study: Border Towns

Summary

A border town is a town close to the boundary between two countries, states or regions. Usually the term implies that it is one of the things the town is most famous for. Border towns can have highly cosmopolitan communities, a feature they share with port cities. They can also be flash-points for international conflict.

I suggest the paradigm of border towns for two reasons.  First of all, Palesrael is a bit of a border town being two nations that often seem to be more of one.  The people of Palesrael have been so inbred over the years that the distinction between the two people has become largely artificial.  Sadly, people seem to have been shooting at their cousins and uncles and aunts, much like America in the American Civil War.  America found a lasting peace, and Palesrael can as well.

Secondly, it appears likely that Jerusalem itself will become a bit of a border town, essentially dividing into East Jerusalem and West Jerusalem once again roughly along the original border.  Times have changed to some degree, and the contiguous Israeli sections of East Jerusalem are likely to be ceded to Israel in return for other land that is contiguous to Palestine.  This is a matter of both economic efficiency and convenience, and merely removing the settlements that are deep into Palestine and small is expected to be very expensive.  Reaching a consensus would have been significantly easier if Israeli had not started settling the West Bank, but what has been done has been done.  You cannot change the past.

People around the globe are already happily living in border town arrangements, and that might be the wave of the future in Palesrael.  At some point, Palestine and Israel might join together into one nation again, but a parting of way should allow both nations to heal their wounds and to build their economies in a time of peace and prosperity.  I suggest that it was infeasible to accept a one state solution at this time.

Famous American/Mexican Border Town Pairs

It is common in America to run away to Mexico where the drinking age is 18, I believe, for those who are under the age of 21.  However, it may be that the drinking age of 18 is not actually applied or is applied leniently in Mexico.  “Viva México!  Una margarita, por favor!”
