The apothacary was mostly a haven for leeches and heavy metals (poisons - high on periodic table of the element for atomic weight and on the metal side of it - see mercury as a good example...

I guess that poisoning somebody or removing red blood cells could put the body in overdrive trying to heal itself.  These might still have medical use although the apothacary was essentially banned?

What if you have nothing left?  Try an open blood channel by a needle and tube to let blood go instead of leeches and maybe gasoline drinking to poison you.  What about the cancer risk of petroleum and it's products?
