Introducing Dreadnought 2050
Here's UK Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon, listing just a few of Dreadnought 2050's capabilities:

  • "3-D printed drones," built onboard and launched from a stern "garage" to perform reconnaissance
  • "supercavitating" torpedoes capable of rocketing through the water at speeds up to 300 mph
  • an electromagnetic railgun with a range up to 120 miles
  • a laser cannon
  • a "holographic command table" in the Combat Information Center, running all the above

Even that is not all. Further reports indicate that Dreadnought will tout hypersonic missiles, and tow an airborne quadcopter drone to provide 360-degree surveillance for miles around. (Looking something like this.) The hull, constructed of acrylic composites and coated in graphene, will have windows that will be electrically "toggle-able" from translucent to transparent, for easy visibility closer-in. And being designed as a trimaran, and propelled by electric waterjets in its outriggers, Dreadnought will travel stealthily at speeds up to 50 knots -- as fast as or faster than America's own Littoral Combat Ships.

Now -- how will all that compare to existing warships in the here and now?

Putting Dreadnought in context
According to Startpoint, Dreadnought 2050 will stretch about 510 feet in length, with a 120-foot beam. The new battleship would thus be twice the size of America's Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers. Yet this entire beast of a battleship will be run by a crew of as few as 50 sailors.

Indeed, accounting for the added girth of a trimaran design, Dreadnought could resemble America's new Zumwalt-classsuper-destroyers in size, with a displacement of anywhere from 15,000 to 22,000 tons. Charged "by the pound," this implies a likely cost of perhaps $5 billion and change per battleship. (The number will doubtless be higher by the time the ship enters service in 2050, after 35 years of inflation.)

And, now a discussion of the issues NOW with this 2050 view of a battleship.

1) Issue: Two or Three Hulls, true, that is pretty dope to have more than one hull to cut through the water more effectively and efficiently, to make a faster boat or ship.  However, I think that you will find that TWO HULLS is more effective than THREE HULLS.  Three hulls means less cornering ability, and if you want to be able to make a U-Turn in the Atlantic, you should probably limit yourself to 2 hulls.

2) Issue: Not enough guns.  While it is true that we about never want to use the guns (try about 21 inch for some, and mismatches so you have one of them in a setup with two smaller guns, maybe 11 inch guns, and just one setup of this will do, and a rear 16 and 9 inch sent for heavy firepower) of a battleship because there is too much collateral damage for sea-to-land attacks, you might need that kind of firepower to take out enemy capital ships or aerial ships.  Having guns in place is some kind of security.  Perhaps, 3 to four sets of guns about evenly split between front and tail is the answer you seek.

3) Why wait so long for torpedoes (a wise weapon to include) that go fast?  Don't you think that here in CIA afterlife we already have those?  See me soon, MI5!  A plan awaits, I think, to make it so! SIGN:YES.

4) Why create drones with a 3D printer?  Don't you think the supplies take up the same room as the finished drones, basically?  A bunch of wasted space on the ship for supplies and ALSO for 3D printing?  I would like to see the argument for that.

A pretty good view of what modern technology as seen around the world might lead you to believe would be the battleship of the future.  However, why not have the same people consider this view and come up with something new.  I am just not seeing that one!

EDITOR'S LATER NOTE:

1) Having guns that exist in place are a commodity even with magical warfare.  Don't just assume that you will get the guns you want by magic, a potentially fatal mistake.

2) Try the 190 howitzer as a primary armament of the battleship, and a whole lot of them.  That should be strong enough for ship-to-ship warfare with the shape charges we already have, I guess.  And, it should also allow shelling where safe ship-to-air-or-land.

How does that do, England?  Yes, we have advanced armor, I think.  Try 12 percent silver and aluminum, the recently declassified metallurgy from the CIA afterlife.  That will be the key, I guess.  Over.
